After vaccinating tens of thousands of Islanders against COVID-19 in a bid to return to life as normal, an effort akin to wartime Britain, it has been confirmed that the Riverside Vaccination Centre in Newport will close on 28th August.
It has been revealed by Solent NHS Trust that mass vaccination services in the region will cease to run in their current format from 31st August, with the last working day on site at Riverside being Sunday 28th August.
As a result of a reduction in the number of appointments being made, the Riverside Centre is operating revised opening times during August. All Friday clinics have now been cancelled, as well as clinics on Monday 15th and Monday 22nd for children aged 5-11.
The Riverside Vaccination Centre opened on 1st February 2021 and, over the past 18 months, a team of staff and volunteers have vaccinated literally tens of thousands of Islanders, with efforts also made in GP surgeries and other vaccination hubs elsewhere on the Island. The first person to receive a jab at Riverside was 71-year-old Paul Carpenter from Ryde.
To date, 113,731 Islanders have received 1 vaccine dose, 109,163 have received 2 doses and 92,280 have received 3 – a total of 315,174 vaccinations given, the majority of which have been administered at Riverside.
It was back in June that it became clear take up was dwindling and services were starting to wind down.

A big thank you to all concerned.
Everyone at the Riverside were fantastic and the visits ran like clockwork. Thank you to all who were involved in the rollout of the vaccinations. You’re all fantastic!
Closing it just in time for the start of the next winter wave of virus cases. Smart. A big thank you to all who worked there keeping us going.
Keep leaving in fear Paul!
Well done one and all for your extreme efforts.
What was it that the covidiots said would happen if you had the jab??? Odd that the scientists were right, that the jab has made getting the virus a non event. Where as the covidiots told us all we would die from getting it. Well I have had the job three times, still here, still healthy and still not had the virus. Yet most of the covidiots people I know were off work for weeks and in a bad way with two ending up in hospital. Almost like they didn’t know what they were talking about.
Plenty of time yet fred, just wait. We’re see who the covidiots are
You’ll be telling us you have Ukrainian decorations up next.
what about all those that haven’t bothered having any jabs at all and covid is a non event for them.
What about all those that had jabs, however, may have been just fine without any jabs at all – they were pestered into getting a jab based on the fear of the unknown and now that they have been jabbed, may be subject to unintended consequences much later on, that won’t have been known due to no long term safety data available.
the scientists weren’t right about the jab making the virus a non event, as the scientists cannot provide any evidence to state that an individual who was jabbed, may have had the same symptoms without it.
im vunerable never jabbed..never has it ,partner got the worst one…flue like,no jab, never died! never needed.like most healthies.
jabbed folk at his work are falling like flies whilst partner…who spent whple day with a covid positive unknowingly still NEVER caught it
what its done is dampened down healthy immunes systems so catching it is easier and getting over any sort if virus takes way longer.but gullables dont do there homework.
bbc1 dont count
You are not very bright are you?
… I’m still here, still healthy… & haven’t had any jabs
Thank you everyone for the efficient friendly service. A credit to the Island caring attitude.
Glad its done. Just knock it down and build some nice riverside apartments, and leave it to the mainlanders to do. The island is crying out for a mainlanders touch.
Why did it remain open and funded for so long and how much was it costing the taxpayer? Way after it was needed with people going to their GP surgeries.
