Isle of Wight competitors took 7 medals – 4 gold, 2 silver and bronze – on the Day 2 of the 2023 NatWest Island Games in Guernsey.
The 7-medal haul leaves the Isle of Wight in 4th place in the medals table, behind hosts Guernsey, Jersey and the Faroe Islands.
The Isle of Wight won its 3rd and 4th gold medals in NatWest Island Games shooting events with Jennie Cartwright taking gold in the Women’s Individual Sport Trap and Dan Bishop winning gold in the men’s event.
Yesterday, Jennie and Dan both struck gold in the men’s and women’s Sport Trap Team competition.
On yesterday’s shooting achievements, Jennie said:
“The guys did so well, it’s hard to imagine the pressure of a shoot off and it’s difficult to train for but Dan did so well to hold his nerve.”
Imogen Reed and Shelley Sprack took silver in a further shooting event: the ISSF 10m Air Pistol Women’s Team event.
The men’s team also achieved a podium place in the Air Pistol Team competition with Perron Phipps and Matthew Reed taking bronze.
In cycling, Kev Chant struck gold for the Isle of Wight in the men’s individual time trial event.

The Isle of Wight team of Kev Chant, Nicholas Hutchings, George Spooner, Joe Stauton and Elvis Belton also took the time trial team gold medal.
In football, the Isle of Wight men’s side won their 2nd game with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Western Isles. Jake Scrimshaw was on target again for the Isle of Wight with his 3rd Island Games goal.
The Isle of Wight women’s side sadly went down to a crushing 0-5 defeat to the Isle of Man.
In basketball, the Isle of Wight were beaten 42-72 by a strong Saaremaa side.
Medals table at end of Day 2 below:
The Island Games sporting action continues today (Day 3 – Tuesday 11th July) with medals to be won in Athletics, Cycling, Shooting, Swimming and Table Tennis.
The Isle of Wight men’s football team face their biggest game of the tournament to date when they take on hosts (and probably favourites) Guernsey at The Track this evening. Kick off is at 18:30.
An inferior goal difference to the host Island means that only victory can take the Isle of Wight through to the semi finals of the competition.
