Mud and ankle-deep puddles failed to stop Isle of Wight Road Runners claiming team and individual honours at Sunday’s Island Cross Country Championship.
The car rally wasn’t the only race taking place on Sunday, as the annual Isle of Wight Cross Country Championship was staged from Smallbrook Stadium.
Organised by Ryde Harriers, the demanding course winds its way through Ashey and the historic Nunwell Estate.
After several weeks of heavy rain, runners were faced with extremely wet and muddy conditions, with ankle-deep puddles scattered across the route.
The testing terrain did little to deter Isle of Wight Road Runners, who delivered an impressive medal haul across the team categories.
The Men’s A team of Ross Wilkes, Nathan Docksey and Nick Kenney powered their way to 1st place, while the Men’s B team – Ben Rand, Matt Fletcher and Steve Apsey – secured a strong 3rd place finish.
There was further success in the women’s competition, with the Ladies A team of Tash Colebrook, Alice Rayner and Jade Rand finishing 2nd overall.
Isle of Wight Road Runners Ladies Captain Alice Rayner said:
“It was a really challenging race in the conditions. Everyone embraced it though and there were some incredible performances from the club!”
Individual honours were also claimed, with several runners earning podium finishes in their respective age categories.
Tash Colebrook capped off a memorable day by battling through the rain and mud to secure 2nd place in the overall women’s race.
She said:
“I really enjoyed the challenge today, was pleased with my performance and was really proud to represent the Isle of Wight Road Runners team.”
