New analysis from Island Labour claims council tax on the Isle of Wight is 27% higher than the average Labour-run authority.
Figures released by Island Labour suggest the average annual council tax bill on the Isle of Wight stands at £2,113, compared to £1,663 across councils controlled by the Labour Party – a difference of around £450.
The analysis comes as the Alliance-led Isle of Wight Council faces ongoing scrutiny over costs and service delivery ahead of the upcoming local elections.
Labour’s Chris Lloyd, who published the data, said:
“You are better off under Labour. These figures underline that for all the bluster from our opponents, the truth is Labour consistently keeps council tax lower than other parties. Here on the Isle of Wight, we are paying more and getting less.
“Here on the Island council tax is high, yet the council still isn’t delivering for Islanders.
“On health & social care, on homes for Islanders, on schools fit for Island children, on protecting the Island environment, and on fixing our roads & public transport – Island Labour has a plan to address the issues which are genuinely affecting Islanders.”
Island Labour says the figures highlight what it describes as a gap between council tax levels and service outcomes locally, with the party setting out its intention to tackle key issues if elected.
No response has yet been issued by the Isle of Wight Council or Alliance representatives in relation to the claims.

Give us our money back then and lower it ..
Under no circumstances be tempted to to vote Labour. Since they were elected to power we have seen all they promised us was pie in the sky. Liers the whole lot of them they must be punished in the ballot box.
The problem is people are thick as shit these wankers that voted them in most probably vote vile freak show greens next or labour again..
Where is your evidence of this? They have honoured all of their manifesto commitments or are continuing to work to honour them. It has been a long time since we had a government that did this so effectively. We should be proud of Labour, and support them in turning the country around after 14 years of austerity and local council defunding. I know how I’ll be voting next month!
Smash the gangs no council tax increase no income tax increase(stealth rise) no national insurance increase pensioners fuel allowance etc etc etc just a few for starters could go on no problem. No wonder they are at 16% in the opinion polls punishment incoming estimates at 2200 councilors.
I am surprised 16%
They have done more ‘U’ Turns than
a driving instructor does!
Even the most rose tinted labour voter will not vote for them in the local elections, they have driven the economy into the ground, lied about a 25 billion black hole they inherited which was totally disproved ny the OBR, rewarded the workshy, penalised workers with higher costs, pubs, restaurents are closing at alamring rates becuase of the increase in costs, and all they talk about is green economy when oil and gas are just waiting to be brought ashore from the north sea. The damage they do out country will take decades to put right..
Like most things on the island council tax is extortionate
compared to the rest of the country, not to mention
garden waste charges (SCANDALOUS)
It’s about time council tax was reviewed and many homes
may be entitled to a lesser charge and some homes an higher
charge.
Working on 1991 council tax bands is ridiculous
it is now 2026
35 YEARS OUT OF DATE!
Is this the same Labour that’s raised just about every tax there is? Bankrupted businesses, lost jobs and raised prices?
Eh? Taxes are down for most of the population. The overwhelming majority of businesses are better off because of Labour’s changes. Labour are dealing with the cost of living crisis with measures across the board. Your energy bills are down this month. Haven’t you noticed, because I have! Unemployment is marginally up – but so is employment.
‘The overwhelming majority of businesses are better off because of Labour changes’.
Just what planet are you on?
What planet are you living on as its certainly not this one, you obviously believe all the crap that comes out of Starmers mouth let alone Rachael from accounts, why do you think they are called the Liebour party because thats what they are.
I’d reply to you seriously but I’m dealing with a liar here
There is none so blind that cannot see, and chris you are A typical of a labour voter,my grandparents voted labour, my parents voted labour, I must vote labour or else I will burst into flames. rgardless of howbad they are.
Yes but we have councillors with expensive tastes. We have to keep them in the style they have grown to love
Councillors get paid peanuts unless they are in the most senior positions.
Bloody hell you have been brainwashed havent you.
Get paid peanuts, probably why the majority have the intellect of a monkey.
It has to be higher to feed the 6 councillors including the so called council leaders half a million pounds in in three years
Expenses my foot
Deep pocket councillors
Not that I’m condoning the cost of our Council tax but Labour obviously failed geography o level. We are an island and therefore not the same as other constituencies. Just another example of political parties handing out vote bait.
Labour suggesting costs are too high, how hyprocritical of them, what party has driven up costs since the minute they came into power, who supports councils putting up their annual council tax each and every year without any inprovement in services, who constantly rewards those that choose not to work with illusionary ailments to the detriment of those that actually work, who is trying to destrpy the farming community, who are forcing businesses to close on an epic scale, who has made our military a laughing stock in the world, yes you’ve guessed it , Labour.
Just like the Lib Dems in 2010 with their coalition with the
Tories and Labour in 2024 cancelling winter fuel allowances
for the elderly, both parties have not done themselves any
favours.
I estimate another small turnout at the elections,
people are now realising no matter who one votes for
they all promise this and that and FAIL to deliver on their
promises!
Why would you fund winter fuel allowance for the wealthy? Any elderly person who has income equivalent to average annual UK salary or less receives the winter fuel allowance, and also has the triple lock. That is incredibly generous. Any elderly person with a higher income than that does not need the winter fuel allowance and those funds should be directed elsewhere I’m sure you would agree?
I do agree, but in 2024 they cut it for ALL the elderly
apart from persons receiving benefits
NOT ALL PENSIONERS ARE WEALTHY!
Yes anyone earning so much should not receive
the benefit, which now the Government are taking
back from such persons.
The benefit pot for persons NOT wanting to do a days
work is FULL and they get new vehicles!
The whole system is out of date and out of touch.
THEY KEEP SAYING THEY ARE THE PARTY FOR WORKERS
MY A@SE ARE THEY!
If you check your facts you will find that over 400 thousand wealthy UK individuals asked the government not to pay them an old age pension and winter fuel allowance, they did not want it and did not need it at a cost saving of over 4.6 billion a year, labour said their is no framework to stop these payments and in any event it is too difficult to organise, we will just put up the workshy’s benefits as an alternative. Yep vote labour, such a good idea.
“Labour has a plan to address the issues which are genuinely affecting Islanders”.
Really? Has it been “fact checked” by their most supportive contributor to these pages?
“Labour has a plan” – IF ONLY!
Two Tier Kier is on his 17th Uturn since he came to the job.
He will be gone by the end of May.
Fingers crossed, but his W.E.F Bosses might want him to
stay in position until 2029 when their other party they
control takeover (The Reform Party)
