The Isle of Wight Council has announced that it is caring for 17 unaccompanied asylum-seeking children — but the majority are now living in London.
This is after the government made it mandatory, under the National Transfer Scheme (NTS), for any local authority with a children’s services department to accept transfers of children into their care. Legally, the council has to take care of the children coming to the country but has decided -that to meet their cultural, ethnic and religious needs – they would be best placed elsewhere.
Kim Goode, children’s services area director, speaking at a council meeting Thursday (9th June), said sending them to London was a difficult decision to make but it seemed to be working.
Most of the 17 children are Muslim, Ms Goode said, and the teams ensure they receive support including a copy of the Quran, prayer mat and access to their local mosque.
Ms Goode said the children are placed with carers from a similar ethnic background which has not been possible on the Island.
The children are all male and have come from countries including Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Kuwait and Syria, whilst most travelled over to the UK by small boats from Calais and have experienced significant trauma in their home countries, often, the council said, including witnessing the death of a parent.
Some are now supported by the Island’s care leavers service but all receive the same statutory services and support as other looked after children on the Isle of Wight, including health assessments, dental and optician checks.
They also receive legal advice to help them secure their status in the country and ensure they can remain.
Debbie Price, the children in care service manager, said if it was felt it would be more appropriate for the child to be placed on the Island, they would be.
Under the NTS, the government supports the council by providing funding of £143 per child per night.

Why the hell are we paying for this. Sad as it may be, they are not on the island so we shouldn’t be paying for this.
Not paying,IWC making money as above stated that government is paying £1000 per week, that’s £17,000 per week for 17 and around £700,000 a year for just 17 youngsters.
but the Gov are providing the funding and not the council or so as it reads
We the taxpayer are footing the bill! Income tax etc etc, all goes to central government.
Its called humanitarian aid, we donate millions every year whilst our own country has homeless families and are suffering a financial crisis…..
Thats wierd
Your not, at least not unless it’s over £143 a night, suggest you read article?
Island council should be working for Island projects. Not mainland ones, no matter how “caring” it seems. Paying for religious stuff is that in the remit of council spending now then. In which case can I claim for a large gold cross and some wooden benches please. Ridiculous.
Children with beards, and smart phones and plenty of money to pay people smuggling….who leave their women alone to fight…
Probably some of the same children claiming to be under 18 yet found to be circa 25-35 year olds. As the saying starts “you can fool some of the people” etc etc.
What a dreadfully racist and stereotype view.
Not really, it happened. Stop being a snowflake and toughen up. Is it being racist to tell the truth, I think not.
Where did the race card come from???? I said nothing about race…
Why all the thumbs down ?
Has IE has been infratuated by gen.z
Lol.
the people will one day revolt against this governed country
Dream on fella…if only.
People don’t care no more, most have just given up all hope.
What with all the new generation’s of brain washed youngsters coming through the system…we are all f****d !
No wonder the council has no funds to help deserving people on the island.
I do genuinely feel for all in this situation, but £143 per day per child ????
Over 1 year for 17 children equates to £887-315 ……
And £143 per day is more than some of our families on the island have in a week!!!!!!
No wonder our council tax is constantly rising , and Councils are bemoaning they are in deficit!!!!!
Not saying we shouldn’t help , but let’s get our priorities right …
We need to know what that £143 per day is spent on every penny….
Man made religious books, this country is becoming more Woke by the day…
What that another bunch asylums coming to this country getting free hand out from tax payers again the tax payers are the government we must have mugs ritting across our for heads this country is a joke to live here we let in any asylum seekers in it’s about time this country needs to toughing up when you asylum seekers on the news than come in to this country and you see them with mobile phone all they are interested in is to get free hand outs
In london! So let london pay.leave islanders money alone.
All males? How weird!
Sounds like a scam going on too me if kids were REALLY COMING UNACCOMPANIED there would be plenty of girls too lol
Our useless council trying too win brownie points by “helping” cos they know our island is already ramned with all sorts and struggling (although too many more houses still get built!)
Wow just work it out and its cost just over £17000 a week to keep them .. I’d love to know who works out how much it costs to keep 27 kids ( I’d love to have £1000 a week per child ).
Why are they not cared for in London, or around London? Why bring them here..? There is not enough ‘ care’ facilities for the people that already live here… This is absurd…
They can’t even look after the children here. Wow its great to help but this island has a long way to being competent and now they are looking after frightened children. Need to help people and families on the island first.
Get that right then move on to this.
No resources but taking on more is it the money
Perhaps because Council wish, in accordance with Johnson and Patel, to then ship those poor kids to Rwanda.
Patel and her parents were economic refugees to this country. How about sending her on a 1way ticket to Rwanda?
stop being such a whiny do gooder – we don’t want those spongers here and we demand that the council cut all funding – after all it is our money. leeches.
Why don’t you open up your home for these poor people?????.
Least they’re seeing a dentist when children born here can’t !
I fully agree with everyone who has been down thumbed but we’re are the counter comments from people doing this. Come on we would all like to hear how you think this is a good idea for the goverment to pay for illegals that have no right to be here
Refugees apply for a visa to enter our country, many if not all of these have entered the country illegally to abuse our generosity, they are all criminals and should be treated as such by being deported.
They have all passed through many safe states but our handouts are better and isn’t it odd almost all are young males.
Why don’t they have parents with jobs? Or better yet a place to stay.
Problem solved…..
May I say on behalf of myself and the other folk who have been given the thumbs down thank you for disagreeing with us !!!!
Just goes 2 show the truth hurts ….
Our money being thrown away, come off it £143 a night totally ridiculous I would love to have £143 a day / night to spend ……
If all of you who voted thumbs down would like to make personal contributions please do so !!!!!!!
The first two people whom commented on this one article have so far received 88 thumbs down between them.
Something smells fishy.
How very sad, IW Council cannot look after our own…
A woke hand wringer has obviously been triggerd by the truth and flagged my comments for removal. Thankyou IE for supporting the war on free speech.
No wonder council tax increases. With social services spending huge sums on people who have no connections with the IOW,
If you’re quick there’s a plane flying back to rwanda today!
