Isle of Wight alt-rock band Ugly Ozo have released their debut single, ‘Remains’. Ugly Ozo is fronted by Isle of Wight-born Jess Baker alongside her younger sister, Boo. Ugly Ozo explores, among other things, themes of feminine rage, revenge and supernatural horrors. In the words of Baker:
“Ugly Ozo will leave you feeling empowered, bewitched, and ultimately a bit freaked out.”
The single ‘Remains’ has been released via cult Portsmouth label Strong Island Recordings – responsible for early offerings from Los Bitchos, Ugly, Rosie Alena and Anona (The New Eves). It tells a gutsy tale of betrayal and revenge via a sonic blend of Breeders-esque alt-rock anthems and Pretty Sick’s steely grunge. The single has been mixed by Guy Page (Coach Party), and is accompanied by an occult music video of church altars, grave digging, tarot cards and circle candles. Jess offers further insight into the track:
“‘Remains’ embodies the intensity of emotions stirred by betrayal and injustice. “Drawing inspiration from personal experiences, Ugly Ozo channels the tumultuous journey of confronting a man who has wronged her in a pursuit for truth and vengeance. Through haunting melodies and eerie surf guitars, ‘Remains’ captures the cathartic release of reclaiming power and seeking retribution from both the perpetrator and his allies. “This song is a testament to the unyielding spirit of those who refuse to be silenced.”

Often seen performing in fairy wings, the debut single comes off the back of a performance at the Isle of Wight festival back in June and notable recent shows with Sunfruits, Hotel Lux, Shelf Lives, The Pill and ELLiS·D. Following on from an initial series of dates with Lauran Hibberd last Autumn, Ugly Ozo embark on their biggest UK tour to date this September, supporting the indie-pop singer/songwriter across 9 UK dates.
