UPDATE: The Island’s first female bus driver, Elsie Jackson, has sadly died aged 89.
Elsie was known by a great number of people on the Island having first moved here from Chesire in the 1950’s when she began working for Cunard out of Southampton on the Queen Mary and The Mauritania.
A few years passed before Elsie joined Southern Vectis as one of the first Conductresses’ and later became the first female bus driver on the Island, a role she continued until her retirement.
Just last year Elsie visited the Isle of Wight Bus Museum where she was well received by many who remembered her.
Elsie died peacefully on Saturday afternoon at St Mary Hospital, Newport following a short illness.
UPDATE 26TH AUGUST – Elsie will be making her final journey at the Isle of Wight Crematorium on Wednesday 2nd September at 12 noon. Everyone that knew her is welcome to attend.
For those attending without transport, there will be a Vintage Coach provided by the Isle of Wight Bus Museum to transfer mourners to the reception, which is to be held immediately after the service at The Castle Inn, Fitzroy Street, Sandown.
Donations are welcome to the IOW Bus Museum, which was close to her heart.
