Despite increases across the country, reported cases of flytipping on the Isle of Wight remain the same.
With the household waste recycling centres at Lynnbottom and Afton Marsh closed to the public still, although with a view to open in the coming weeks, rubbish has been stacking up with people staying at home — with a small number of people putting it in public bins.
However, the Isle of Wight Council has said the number of flytipping incidents reported since the start of lockdown has remained ‘within the normal levels for this time of year’.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council said a majority of the incidents which have been reported are people putting waste out on the wrong day or leaving excess rubbish on the pavements.
“While the householder recycling centres have been shut, the council made the decision to keep the commercial waste and recycling centre open at Lynnbottom, as well as as the plasterboard and asbestos disposal, allowing private waste carriers, trades persons and businesses to continue working and disposing of their recycling and waste responsibly.
“This has supported the Island and its businesses to stay working safely and protecting our environment.
“The council does wish to thank residents for the patience they have shown during this time and the excellent efforts made to recycle as much as possible and keep residual waste levels down.”
All reports to the council or Island Roads of flytipped rubish have been cleared up.

I have been discriminated against by the Council – despite paying full council tax I have been unable to dispose of my rubbish although commercial disposal has been made available – there has to be some compensation for me I will have to create my own otherwise!
We pay councils for lots of things that we never get – get over it!
I’m with u on that 1…..thieving gits
Larry, to get a discount on council tax, perhaps you’d prefer a ‘pay as you go’ option for some services like excess waste disposal. Wonder how busy the tip would be then? Perhaps people might not buy so much junk.
>Stay at Home in Ryde – I would love to pay just for the services I use. My house here on the island (band H) is in excess of £3,900 and my other house in wales (band I) in excess of £4,000.
Pay just for what I use – YES PLEASE
Same here. Not the council tax bill…the pay as you go concept!
Don’t have two houses then! You can afford to pay council tax if you can afford two properties. Some of us can barely keep one going especially now!
Smithy >>>Looser
Why? I’ve explained the error I made. Anyone can make a mistake mr perfect.
I stand by my comment about moaning about paying council tax on two properties though.
How can band h be 3.9k? I’m band c and it’s around 1.8k.
I am paying over £3,900 – you must live in a down-market property – A mobile home possibly?
Bloody cheek! I don’t live in a downmarket property! For your info it’s a Victorian semi and worth around 300k! Don’t forget bands were set years ago.
Smithy.
I suggest you check the Isle of Wight Council Tax bandings- definitely 3.9k for a band h.
Don’t forget, just because you ‘only’ pay 1.8k for a band C property, it isn’t a straight progression for bandings. Plus H is five bands above C!
I tried deleting my post when I realised I had the bands the wrong way round! Apologies to all. It didn’t delete!
I have two properties and don’t pay any council tax!
Because I work for the council.
Perks of the job I guess.
Happy Days
