Police have closed 1 of 2 roads in and out of the village of Bembridge this afternoon (Tuesday) following the discovery of a piece of historic ordnance.
Embankment Road has been closed in both directions between St Helens and Bembridge in the interests of public safety.
It’s understood a member of the public found what appears to be a hand grenade a short time ago, prompting a call to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary.
Now, the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team in Portsmouth have been alerted to the find and have advised an exclusion zone is established.
The ordnance has been found on the banks of the harbour near to Bembridge Marine.
It is unclear at this stage how long the road is to remain closed for, but it is known that high tide is just around the corner…
All motorists and pedestrians are being diverted away from the area with the not access into Bembridge now via Yaverland.
UPDATE @ 20:30 – The road has now reopened following the successful recovery and detonation of the object.
Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts have carried out a controlled explosion at Silver Sands, bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.
