An investigation has been launched after a Gyrocopter overturned upon landing at Bembridge Airport this afternoon (Wednesday), with the incident now having been referred to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).
As first reported by Island Echo, the aircraft came to rest upside down on the runway at around 12:10, prompting a significant emergency response at the airport on Sandown Road.
Witnesses described hearing a loud bang before looking towards the runway and seeing the gyrocopter overturned. Island Echo understands the aircraft landed but went on to suffer a malfunction involving its rotor system, causing it to flip onto its roof.
At approximately 12:15, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary officers returning from an unrelated incident became aware of the aircraft accident at the Propeller Inn, Bembridge Airport.
Police, alongside crews from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency service partners, attended the scene.
Thankfully, the pilot escaped with only minor injuries despite the dramatic nature of the incident.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed:
“During the incident, it’s reported that an aircraft had turned over upon landing. Thankfully, the pilot sustained only minor injuries as a result of the incident.
“We attended the scene, along with our emergency service partners from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service.
“The incident has now been referred to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.”
The AAIB is responsible for investigating civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents across the UK to establish their cause and improve aviation safety. It is expected to make initial enquiries before deciding the scope of its investigation.
