It is estimated around 2000 people of all ages took part in yesterday evening’s annual Bembridge Fort Walk, which is said to have been one of the busiest in recent years and possibly in the history of the event.
Despite low tide being at around 20:25 yesterday (Monday), crowds of people made their way to the waters edge shortly after 18:00 in a bid to reach the fort first. Some walkers ventured waist-high into the sea, with others hanging back that little bit longer to allow the causeway to be revealed by the falling tide.
Scores of people kept arriving on both sides of Bembridge Harbour at the Toll Gate Café and at The Duver, all aiming to reach St Helen’s Fort.
Despite the large turnout, the walk is unorganised and unofficial and has no set date or time as no organisation wishes to take responsibility for the large numbers of walkers. In recent years, thanks to social media, the walk has grown in popularity and is seeing more and more walkers taking part each and every year.
Traditionally the 3/4 mile trek takes place on the lowest tide in August and is normally on a weekday.
