A discarded cigarette is thought to be the cause of a fire which came dangerously close to a gas meter in Newport this morning (Thursday).
1 appliance from Newport Fire Station was mobilised the short distance to Langley Court on Pyle Street at around 11:20.
A small fire broke out at the entrance to an office block, causing a plastic gas meter box to melt.
SGN engineers are due to attend the scene to fix the gas meter.
Islanders should take extra care with lighted materials during this time of hot and dry weather.

A huge thanks to the IOW Fire Brigade who attended the scene promptly and also SGN (Gas Service) who came and made everything safe.
I thought gas meter boxes were supposed to be fireproof? For the obvious reason…
They are, its called “inflammable”
What utter rubbish.
There is NO way in the world that a ciggy butt dropped on a Gas meter box would cause it to ignite.
Prove it yourself if you don’t believe me.
The area is solid paving blocks and atco draining made of metal. So it is not like a fire even started near the box.
What with a Ryde council house burning down, supposedly caused by a ‘bottle’ I think the fire brigade need to send the fire accessor to Specsavers when it opens
Seems like arson to me.
