There will be gallybaggers aplenty when the Chillerton & Gatcombe Scarecrow Festival returns between 25th May and 1st June 2024. Islanders are invited to explore the vast array of scarecrows created by villagers and put on display in their gardens and around the village. It is anticipated that there will be over 100 scarecrows to see in the Island’s quirkiest festival, from traditional gallybaggers to those on a more modern theme. This year’s event is being coordinated by Chillerton and Gatcombe Community Association. The festival has been running bi-annually since 2010 and is an event that the 2 villages of Chillerton and Gatcombe put on for the enjoyment of Islanders and visitors over the half-term break. Aunt Sally’s Tea Rooms will be open in the Village Hall from 11:00-16:00 throughout the 9 days of the festival.
The Gallybagger Inn will also open on Saturday 25th May, Sunday 26th May and Saturday 1st June from midday to 16:00, complete with live music. The Gallybagger will also open as normal in the evenings from 19:00. Residents looking to take part are asked to email Sharon Newstead on [email protected]. A meeting is due to be held on 24th April at 19:00 in the Chillerton Village Hall. Scarecrow maps will be available from the Village Hall and The Gallybagger Inn nearer the time, with a public vote set to be held to find the festival’s best scarecrow – as voted for by the public!
