God’s Providence House in the heart of Newport has been awarded a 2-star food hygiene rating following its latest inspection by Environmental Health.
It was in February 2020 that Island Echo reported that the popular team room at St Thomas’ Square had been handed a 1-star rating. By November, that had improved to a 4-star rating.
However, God’s Providence House has returned to its usual 2-star rating as awarded in 2015, 2017 and now again in 2022.
According to the Isle of Wight Council’s inspectors, hygienic food handling at the premises is generally satisfactory, as is the management of food safety. However, improvement is deemed necessary in terms of the cleanliness and condition of facilities and the building.

how is this still open fgs! i ate there few years back and mine was a simple jacket spud with salad…its was dire.very poor qauality with lettuce so limp it looked days old!
even loos at time where up lots of stairs and loo was old and cistern never stopped refilling.whole place is very tired and needs revamp.glad i vowed never too return.not a fan of food poisoning
So God’s Providence may well have been a refuge in the Middle Ages from the plague let’s hope the protection still exists today from food poisoning
Customers pray after the meal, instead of saying grace before it.
Put your faith in God, because you can’t trust the cleaners apparently!
It’s the management
Sounds like that place needs an act of god.
Ordered food from here via a well known delivery app not realising it was the same place. Had to spit food out as it was rotten. Salad slimy and smelling. The whole order went in the bin after our first bite. Everyone slips every now and then or has hardships…but for such consistent feedback and hygiene ratings? I’m afraid they should be ashamed.
I went there a couple of years ago. ITS ONE DIRTY PLACE!!!
Perhaps they were waiting for god to wave his hand and do a miracle clean hahaha haha god what a load of delusional hooey
Sad as back.in the 80s/90s i went there regularly.the food was lovely been changed hands many times since. Went once a year or so ago and it was very tired looking. Shame
That is because it is about 300 years old for gods sake.
May i suggest that you stick too mc.D’s.
You can’t have old world charm without a bit of dust.
Plus the old people like it that way.
Exactly, we can’t expect a place that’s 500 years old to look like a McDonald’s, nor its food made from scratch to taste like highly processed junk food. These people have no taste and their tastebuds have long been ruined by a life of junk food!
I ate there once with my girlfriend and daughter. The total cost was knocking on to £30 for a small breakfast, veggie breakfast and kids breakfast. Staff admittedly were lovely but to pay that amount for a mediocre meal is extortionate. I put a review on TripAdvisor to highlight the cost and quality concerns,
Just how many chances does a person get before they make someone poorly or worse. We all deserve better than this. Shut him down for God’s sake!!!
How funny. :literally went in there last weekend when in town for a coffee with my other half. Took one look around and immediately left – didn’t need to be a rocket scientist to see it was a bit sh*t and dirty/tired. Glad I went to One Holbrook instead.
A leopard never changes it’s spot’s .
Sorry once an eatery gets low star’s no 2nd chance, vote with your wallet / feet …..
Salmonella is not nice ….
If you can’t conform to good hygiene then close down !!!
Simple …..
I am sure our overseas friends will be delighted to live there if it’s turned into flats and we pay their rents and c. Tax and support every child born to A handy location for dealing.
This is a historical place run by a family for years, not McDonald’s or a food chain. I’ve been a happy customer, always recognised even though I go every 3/5months. Food is good. We wait bec it’s made from scratch. M might be difficult to make it look aseptic with its flagstone or parquet floors, unusual toilets, but where can you find all these delightful little rooms, be served by staff clad in black like 50 years ago who refer to you as Madam?
Place is irreplaceable,unique.
Help it raise its standards by eating there rather than criticising it. Nobody’s has suffered fr food poisoning.
Derangers, hit McDonald’s, ppl wi taste like Gods Pr
I’ve been eating here regularly (at least one a month) for years. I have never had a problem with the quality of food. It is always fresh – including the salad (can I suggest that if it was delivered that it heated up en route by the hot food ). Its an old historic building. Any changes, however minor, have to go though the conservation officer and planning. believe me, this isn’t easy or cheap. If you read the article, the food handling isn’t the issue. I and nobody I have gone with there over the years has suffered food poisoning (unlike a couple of the local take aways, on more than one occasion!). I will definitely keep going. MERANGUE!
Can I suggest that the majority of those that knock these places may not actually have been there? Last time this cropped up we had the usual complainents moaning about the chefs(plural) learing at young girls whilst fagging up out the back? The chef(singular) was a woman so clearly some people have it in for the place.
I have never had a bad meal or experience in there in the 20 years I have known the place.
