Sandown’s retained firefighters were mobilised to reports of an out of control bonfire on the grounds of the Melville Hall hotel earlier this evening (Monday).
1 appliance arrived on scene at Melville Street and discovered greenery alight.
Due to the commercial bonfire being too close to the large pile of tree cuttings, trees and fences, the fire had to be extinguished to prevent from causing any further damage.
It is important with large bonfires to ensure there will be no damage to property, overhead power or telephone lines and road surfaces. The bonfire should be sited no less than 18 metres from buildings, trees, wooden fences etc. The smoke and fumes should not affect any adjacent roads or railways.
Islanders are being urged not to light bonfires during this time of crisis.
UPDATE: The management of Melville Hall Hotel say that the bonfire was controlled and managed throughout.

If the council had kept the local recycle center open people wouldn’t have to start burning their rubbish. Also the amount of fly tipping has increased for the same reason. There is no reason why they had to close, There is enough room to social distance with some minor alterations

Well maybe there were people nearby suffering from breathing in the smoke. People with asthma of which there are many find it so difficult from having to breathe in so much smoke in the air. especially now with having to worry about every cough and wheeze.
There is already too much smoke about from wood burners but bonfires as well, you can’t seem to walk anywhere or even open the door without breathing in smoke from somewhere.

As a local having witnessed this, the bonfire was being stoked with material from a tree cut down last week, it was by other vegetation and immediately under other trees. The smoke didn’t rise, but stayed low and blow down the surrounding roads. We had to close all our windows and doors as the smell was so bad, and could still be smelt at 11 o’clock at night.
the newspaper report says otherwise, u making it up? another busybody who has to interfere in a perfectly legal practice, close ur windows, its not that warm, another ‘local’ who feels it necessary to dictate for their convenience how others should live, what a selfish attitude, pathetic, sums up the island, we dont want ur mainland ideas here. For your information, wells, i was born and brought up here, and have no “mainland ideas”, and I can tell you that anyone who suffers from asthma or other bronchial disorders suffer from having to breathe in smoke. Having to walk through is bad enough but when it gets into your home as well, which it can even with windows shut. I don’t open my windows anymore because of so much smoke pollution around from wood burners and bonfires.

If Melville hall had burned correctly by informing the fire brigade and council prior and after burning, they wouldn’t have had this problem. Trouble is these so called professionals dont follow protocol. So yes, fire mismanaged.
