Central convenience store in Wroxall has been handed a shocking food hygiene rating after inspectors uncovered filthy conditions, dead flies and exposed food during a recent inspection.
The inspection of Central Convenience Store, Wroxall Stores on West Street, was carried out on Wednesday (5th February), with a follow-up visit on Monday (10th February) showing some improvement.
Inspectors paid a visit to the shop on West Street back in February, revealing a number of serious hygiene concerns, particularly in the storage room, which has led to a ‘major improvement necessary’ rating.
During the inspection, it was noted that a large ice cream chest freezer was very dirty, with a heavy build-up of dirt, watery residue and food debris. Remains of 2 dead flies were also found lodged inside the internal lid runner.
The same freezer was being used to store other frozen foods, including doughnuts. One tray had split packaging, leaving the food exposed next to the dirt and dead insects, raising concerns over contamination.
Further issues were identified throughout the storage area, including dirty shelving racks with food and drink spillages, and floors that were unclean, particularly along wall edges and in corners.
Inspectors also noted a build-up of debris and items, including food, in hard-to-reach areas such as behind equipment and between walls, increasing the risk of contamination.
Structural problems were also highlighted, with sections of wall near the kitchen bake-off area made from bare wood. Officials said the material is absorbent and cannot be properly cleaned, meaning it must be sealed or replaced.
The report also revealed that similar cleanliness issues – particularly relating to the freezer – had been identified during a previous inspection in October 2024, raising concerns about standards being maintained.
Despite improvements being noted at the revisit on 10th February, the Isle of Wight Council has warned that failure to maintain adequate hygiene standards could result in formal enforcement action.

This filth hole scored badly last time. How many chances
do these sh*tholes get before they are SHUTDOWN!
I for one would never visit such an establishment!
ALSO FORCE BUSINESSES TO DISPLAY THEIR HYGIENE RATING

PEOPLE TO SEE!
Whoever is the manager of the shop needs to get a grip it’s not up to one person it’s whoever works there the responsibilities on all of you to keep it clean, absolutely lazy, you are serving the public food. If you can’t do the job leave?
This isn’t the first, second or even the third time they have been warned or been awarded a 1 star rating in the past few years. You cant expect to pay minimum wage with next to no staff, no training, no management or head office control AND to keep the place up to any standard. They just aren’t capable! Luckily I never have to use the store, but as the only food and drink shop in Wroxall I suspect the owners just don’t care because there are plenty who have no option but to use the place. Time to Fine them, or shut them down (again) until a caring owner is found.
