An additional late crossing of the Floating Bridge between East Cowes and Cowes will be trialled during the Summer monthsto connect with the 23:59 Red Funnel Car Ferry departure from Southampton.
It means the Floating Bridge will make a single crossing from East Cowes at 01:20 after its regular shut down time of 00:30. This will apply between 1st June 1 and 31st August.
Councillor Phil Jordan, Isle of Wight Council’s cabinet member for Transport and Infrastructure, has explained the reasoning behind the move:
“Last year we carried out a survey of Saver Card holders who are regular users of the service. One of the suggestions made to us was for a late-night link up to meet the last car ferry of the day from Southampton. The council wanted to respond to this idea in a positive way and believe it is important to improve transport connections on the Island when we can, hence the introduction of this trial until the end of August.”
There will be no additional crossings from Cowes to East Cowes.

having the pile of scrap running reliably during the day would be a bonus, don’t rely on this late crossing as you will probably be disappointed.
Is this an april fools in may!! What a joker the person is who thought this idea up.it dont even run reliably in the daytime…so now were meant too rely on it working that late lol
Heap of dog turd needs binning
It’ll be cancelled due to mechanical failure (or lack of staff to run it).
That of course depends on whether it is working.
Good idea if it could be trusted to work without a sudden breakdown, or staff going sick. Just how much more is this joke going to cost us in Tax?
I think they should refer to them as “extra late night cancellation opportunities”.
It’s not like the thing’s going to be running long enough to actually make more than one or two of them anyway.
Pile of …. Scrap it and build a bridge,my 1908 motor car is more reliable than that piece of ….
Might as well close the last few roads that are still open as well, more ….handers for W F please
Used to be able to get a trip East to West in the early 70’s in the early hours of the morning when trying to get back from Ryde night clubs, Jump up and down on the chains and hopefully they would come and get you, if that failed it was a night in the ticket office!
By gum what a load of old tosh, the piece of old garbage can’t even run in the day let alone after dark. I wouldn’t risk it travelling after lights out the wife would be worried sick…Steve
