Multiple fire crews, ambulances and Police have responded to a property in Newport this evening (Wednesday) amid fears of a gas explosion.
At just before 18:45, emergency services were alerted to a potential incident on Red Fox Square at St George’s Gate – part of the Bluebell Meadows estate in Pan.
It had been reported to 999 call handlers that there had been a possible boiler explosion within a residential property.
It has been confirmed to Island Echo that almost boiling hot water began escaping from the boiler and flooded the property as a result.
Steam and carbon monoxide began to fill the house, which has led to a family – 2 adults and a baby – being taken to St Mary’s Hospital for observations.
Some residents have reported a loss of hot water and heating on the estate, with all properties fed from a centralised system. It’s thought that difficulties finding the property’s isolation valve has led to the whole system being shut down for a short time.
Emergency services have now left the scene.

Doesn’t come as much of a surprise, there have been countless incidents involving the heat interface units (boilers) in the properties up there and it seems the emergency engineers have had little training on them.
The Biomass system that supplies the development is dreadful and keeps getting worse every time more properties are hooked up to it. The hot water used to be instant, very hot and at a decent pressure, now it takes ages to get hot and lacks pressure. But there again, it is Barratt homes or David Wilson (Barratt’s with a posh door basically) so say no more.
Seems like David Wilson / Barratts need to inspect every install.
Should something happen to my family with one of these they will see me in court
The lack of communication from pan energy & DWH is concerning. No hesitance to send notification of potential works, but when there’s an emergency and no working system they are nowhere to be found?
They definitely need to inspect every install, and also recommend a company for the annual service who actually know what they’re doing!
Centralised system doesn’t exactly give householders independence, sounds like captive clientele likely to be ‘taken for a ride’
