A busy main road through the heart of Ryde remains closed this morning (Wednesday) owing to roadworks by Southern Water.
St John’s Road has been shut between its junctions with Monkton Street and Benett Street, as Southern Water contractors Clancy investigate and repair a problem – thought to be a burst water main.
The road closure came into force last night – although many motorists are ignoring the closure and are travelling through anyway.
Motorists are being diverted via local roads, although Monkton Street remains one-way following a road traffic collision last month. As a result, drivers can only travel northbound from St John’s Road.
Southern Vectis Routes 2, 3 and 8 are diverting via East Hill Road, Esplanade, Dover Street and Park Road until further notice. As a result of the diversion, bus stops at Lower Highland Road, St John’s Railway Station and Benett Street are not being served.
Further up St John’s Road, a depression in the carriageway has led to 3-way temporary traffic lights being installed at the junction with Abingdon Road.

Again… Why is the road CLOSED?! It is perfectly possible to have a one way traffic light system here!! As has ALWAYS been done in past years. The only thing blocking this road is the van parked across the road!! It’s being done on purpose to create havoc for road users in the BS name of ‘safety’. All being done for a reason
