A man who crashed his motorcycle between Fishbourne and Binstead has ended up in court after being caught with 5 wraps of cocaine, before then going on to throw water over a Police officer.
Last Saturday Island Echo reported on a serious crash involving a motorcyclist on Eleanors Grove, on the main road between Ryde and Newport. The road was closed for several hours whilst Police investigated the circumstances of the incident and awaited updates from doctors.
It has now emerged that the rider, 30-year-old Benjamin Alexander Thomas Charles, was knocked unconscious for 10 minutes and had blood pouring from a head injury.
Whilst being treated by paramedics, wraps of cocaine were found in Charles’ trouser leg. A syringe of a brown substance was also found in his man bag.
Appearing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday, Benjamin Charles now of Avenue Road in Sandown, pleaded guilty to the offence of possession, as well as assault by beating of an emergency worker.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that Benjamin was taken to St Mary’s Hospital to be treated for his injuries. When he awoke, he was abusive and demanding. When he was asked to calm down he said ‘f**k off’. Shortly after, Ben grabbed a glass of water and threw it over PC Buchanan and was arrested for assaulting Police.
Benjamin Charles told the court himself that he had been trying to get off heroin for around 3-4 years and acknowledged that if it wasn’t for him going to jail previously he would probably be dead by now. He expressed a desire to get off of drugs.
Magistrates handed the 30-year-old a 9-month community order with a 9-month drug rehabilitation requirement. He was ordered to pay a £95 surcharge.
He was also sentenced for theft from a shop – namely £120 of meat from Lidl.

And once again our laughable magistrates don’t send him to prison, leaving the public at large at great risk when he next gets off his head on drugs. Come on, Island Echo, name and shame these disgusting magistrates. It is time to replace them.
I just can’t believe what I am reading. A ne’er do wrong biker. Not a car driver to be blamed anywhere. WOW.
The police do a great job on the island bringing dealer/users to court, but the pathetic magistrates hand out laughable fines etc. there needs to be much tougher punishment for people who blight the lives of so many others.
I had a strange feeling this incident was caused by drink or drugs, but wasn’t going to say anything when the crash was first reported in case I was wrong…. Seems that the vast majority of these crashes are caused by drink and / or drugs. Now we know the real cause of this incident, I too have no sympathy for this individual! When will people learn?!
Absolutely disgusting as to the light sentence handed out once again. If we stop to consider the cost entailed to deal with this individual; emergency services used (police and ambulance), the cost to local businesses in having the roads closed for hours, the cost of the nhs being used, the cost of this man being held in police custody, the cost of courts and cps…the cost would more than likely exceed £10,000 yet he was ordered to pay a £95 surcharge ! They say crime does not pay but to me it appears the harder us decent folk work the more tax we pay which is handed out to keep lowlife like this on our streets…. #nojustice
