A head-on crash involving 2 cars has trapped the driver of each vehicle and has led to the closure of the main road into Bembridge tonight (New Year’s Eve).
Police, paramedics and fire crews are on scene at Sandown Road – adjacent to Bembridge Airport – where 2 vehicles have collided on a bend. The incident occurred shortly before 19:45.
Emergency crews are currently working to assess and free the individuals who are medically trapped.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has 6 paramedics on scene, including a critical care paramedic and an operational commander.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has 3 appliances from Newport, Sandown and Shanklin in attendance, as well as the Rescue Support Unit from Newport – more than 15 firefighters in total.
The road is closed in both directions but access in and out of Bembridge is maintained via Hillway Road.
It is the second serious road traffic collision this evening – following a pedestrian collision in Sandown – and the second crash to occur on Sandown Road in the past 26 hours.
UPDATE @ 20:58 – It has been confirmed to Island Echo that 2 casualties have received injuries in the crash, but at this time those injuries are not life changing or life threatening.
The male driver of a black modified Renault Clio and the female driver of the silver Ford have both been extricated from their vehicles and are now on their way to St Mary’s Hospital.
Sandown Road remains closed and is likely to remain closed for some time whilst recovery is arranged.

I feel sorry for the Emergency services especially on
New Years Eve, they can do,without the hassle,
also there is a massive NHS back log due to 14 years of
Tory rule.
I feel sorry for your mental stability.
Couldn’t agree more TonyP
Another Numpty uneducated Caulkhead,
it’s never too late to learn.
You have the brains of a Caulkhead.
My thoughts are with you.
He only has one word – Numpty – that he considers a valid contribution to, well, anything. Sad
Oh give it up you plonker..you think this shower of shit going to do any better?
People don’t like to hear the truth,
no wonder the majority of uneducated
Island motorists are speeding around the island
on a daily basis.
Strict Laws are required.
I would like to see IW Council place more safety measures
block off cut through Roads using plant pots etc
works well on the mainland
Happy New Year Punk
Great news for the New Year, just read on BBC NEWS
New 20mph Zones are being considered for the
Isle of Wight.
Thank you and well done to Cllr Jordan and Karen Lucioni
for making our Roads a safer place for everyone,
It’s been long overdue.
I look forward to it coming.
A black modified Renault Clio. I wonder if his insurance company has been infomed of the modifications, or any of the other insurance companies for that matter, of roaring pop bang noisey heaps of crap driving about defying the speed limits. Plod needs to do spot checks on this, they are not difficult to spot are they?
‘Medically trapped’?
