A man has climbed a navigational marker on a disused pier sparking concerns for his welfare at Town Quay in Southampton this afternoon (Friday).
Dozens of emergency service personnel are currently dealing with the ongoing incident beside the car ferry terminal, between Mayflower Park and Town Quay.
Police, paramedics, fire crews, HM Coastguard and Calshot RNLI are all involved in the delicate situation just a stone’s throw away from Red Funnel’s terminal.
Passengers are being ushered away as best as possible as negotiators speak with the distressed male.
The ferry service to and from the Isle of Wight is continuing to operate as per the reduced coronavirus timetable with only minor disruption.

He didn’t actually, he hung himself from the mast
No sympathy! Nice for public to see and children !
Utterly selfish.
Looks like another mental health problem, mental health problems are a massive issue that’s not taken seriously enough in the UK.
The lockdown isn’t helping. We, and many vulnerable people aren’t used to this, too much time, and resources, are being put into coronavirus and other health issues are being neglected. On our small Island we are reading more and more of these stories, they are happening everywhere else aswell. Lift the lockdown fully.
Well the name Moron really does suit you, lift the lockdown? Are you for real?
Moron by name and Moron by nature
I think taken to seriously its all i ever hear about..
We keep hearing about how the lockdown is affecting people’s mental health, but for some quiet sensitive people, their mental health has actually improved as life has been slightly less stressful because of being less people about, especially at night. But then, we are the group that nobody ever seems to care about, it’s the noisy, outgoing people that is praised in our culture, (and not saying anything about this individual as do not know, but he may have been someone who would have done that anyway, not necessarily anything to do with the lockdown, it could be drink or drugs related, so much is, or a failed relationship, who knows?) but from what I’ve heard from different people, it’s the ones who like to go out being gregarious, playing sports or whatever, or otherwise making lots of noise and forever announcing their presence to the whole world, they are the ones who seem to complain the most, poor things,
Well, it’s about time that the people who try to live a more quiet, peaceful life, and are constantly thwarted, were given a little bit of consideration in our society, this lockdown has been a Godsend for some of us, it’s just a little respite for us, over too soon.
So sometimes just spare a thought for those of us who have to suffer in silence as a regular ongoing thing, because of the rest of society liking to be out making as much noise as possible, our mental health has been able to improve slightly , just for a little while.
But yes, whatever drove this person to do what he did, I hope he gets help and finds peace. Plenty of times I’ve been driven to despair, but somehow find some strength from deep inside to dredge up to keep going. I hope he can do the same thing.
It’s that kind of attitude towards people that may be suffering from poorly mental health that is distressing.
It was horrible I was on the red funnel ferry and saw the poor chat up the mast with a rope around his neck . Looking through my fingers thinking please don’t.
There is not enough help for mental health we are loosing loved ones far to often, you can not expect someone with a mental health problem to sit and wait on a long waiting list .I hope he is safe now .
I am not surprised living in sick society.. Just talking to psychologist doesnt help its like putting plaster over the hole.. Thing is human race We are f up It’s in our dna.. Lots of unnecesery suffering.. Living in greedy fast world modern slavery poverty etc etc….
