Police have confirmed that they are investigating the death of an individual who was found floating in the sea off the Isle of Wight yesterday (Sunday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, the cross-Channel Brittany Ferry ‘Cotentin’ reported to HM Coastguard that they had sighted an object in the water around 10 miles South East of Bembridge.
Bembridge RNLI lifeboat and Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter were tasked to the scene, locating a body in the water at around 18:20.
The body – which is yet to be confirmed as being a man or a woman – was taken to Bembridge, where Police were waiting.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said that it is working to ascertain the identity of the person and how they came to be in the water.
At this time the death is being treated as unexplained.
