A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for the Isle of Wight today (Sunday), with wintery showers already resulting in treacherous and dangerous driving conditions on the Island’s roads.
IW Met Service says that showers of sleet and snow will affect the Isle of Wight throughout this morning and into this afternoon, with the warning for both snow and ice in force from now until Monday lunchtime.
Windward coasts will experience more in the way of sleet or hail, but further inland it will turn to snow at times, perhaps even enough for a slight covering of 1-2cm. This will mostly be over high ground in the South Wight.
Later this evening the temperature will fall away once again leading to some very icy conditions across the Island, especially where any of the earlier wintery showers have moved through.
However, motorists are being warned with immediate effect that current conditions are dangerous, particularly in the West Wight, where freezing rain and sleet is falling onto already sub-zero temperatures, leading to roads such as Middle Road becoming like an ice rink. It’s known that there has already been a crash on Baring Road in Cowes this monring.
Over the next 24 hours or so forecasters warn of extremely hazardous travelling conditions in places with snow, slush and sheet ice leading to the risk of accidents and injuries on foot or by vehicle, especially later this evening and overnight.
Delays to cross-Solent travel is also likely, with Red Funnel running with delays of 90 minutes this morning due to the fog.

Sadly too many drivers will not understand the dangerous conditions, more idiots will be along soon…
be safe folks give our emergency services a break,
Let the carnage begin, roads and pavements now have black ice, but still so many idiots driving to fast with dirty windscreens because frozen water jets.
Warnings that the majority won’t follow and cause more easily avoidable accidents. Society is becoming more stupid by the day.
It’s raining now in the East of the island, everywhere is wet. If the temperatures fall to freezing and below tonight, tomorrow morning is going to be a nightmare! Ice, Ice, Ice…….beware ice. Slow down and drive slowly, brake much earlier to slow down, gentle on the brake pedal and steering!
The only people who should be on the roads Sunday night are people on the way to work (i.e hospital workers). There’s very few reasons for anyone else to be out on a Sunday night so, if you risk it, people should have zero sympathy for you when the inevitable crash stories start appearing on here later.
What!!! GRD I don’t think you should bother getting out of bed on a Sunday unless you have a very good reason.
There are three possible explanations for your comment GRD…
1 – You made a complete failure of trying to be funny.
2 – You have absolutely no comprehension nor capacity to understand anybody else’s life but your own.
3 – You have every comprehension and require professional supervision.
You have no idea why people may need to be out driving, not a clue.
Or 4 – he’s stating very obvious facts that nobody else has the guts to say. Fair comment GRD, to many snowflakes, mind the pun, on here that simply lack common sense.
You shoukd not allow forecasts to dlictate your life. Out on bike at 11pm Sunday- not freezing at all, wet!
Where’s the Walrus?
Sabre tooth seal stripes please
No tailgating please, Van Man show some respect to car drivers please….Boy and Girl racers have the day off…
A different story to this one, however, I can’t understand what kind of parents allow children age 8 10 and 11 to play on a frozen lake….sadly 3 children have died in the west Midlands…tragic…
Very little is known about that incident, I’m not sure you should be making assumptions about the parents in this tragic situation.
I would have thought the evidence so far indicates stupidity, 3 soles lost before they could even start really living what could have been good lives…
I also think freezing conditions when it comes to using a lake would need at least a month to freeze up, not a week….you have your options, but try to think outside the box..
