Strong winds and heavy rain are forecast to hit the Isle of Wight throughout today (Tuesday), with cross-Solent travel already disrupted as the front moves in.
Hovertravel has announced that it has suspended its service between Ryde and Southsea as a result of the adverse weather. The next update from the operator is expected at 11:30, but with today’s weather subject to 2 weather warnings it is unlikely the passenger route will be operational for several hours.
Passengers are advised that Wightlink are accepting Hovertravel tickets on their Fastcat service.
UPDATE @ 12:45 – Hovertravel’s service remains suspended this lunchtime and is unlikely to resume anytime soon. The next update is expected at 13:30.
Red Funnel is advising of potential disruption to its vehicle ferry and Red Jet services. Meanwhile, Wightlink is running to time across all 3 routes, according to their website.
The Cowes Floating Bridge replacement passenger launch has been sustained due to the high tide.
UPDATE @ 13:10 – Island Line trains have been suspended between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin due to the severe weather. Disruption is expected until 18:00.
UPDATE @ 14:43 – Wightlink’s Fastcat service has now been suspended due to the adverse weather conditions.

The hovercraft I can understand being cancelled, but why has the train service been cancelled because of wind and rain?

They can’t go up the pier, or probably even into Esplanade, because the waves are breaking over the railway. Not sure why they can’t do Shanklin-St Johns, concerns over flooding?
