A garage containing gas cylinders partially collapsed – and a vehicle was damaged – in an overnight blaze in Arreton, which began spreading to neighbouring properties.
Fire crews from Newport, Shanklin, Sandown, Ryde and Cowes were mobilised to Hopkins Walk, off Cherrywood View, shortly after 02:00 this morning (Thursday), as first reported by Island Echo.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that the garage was well alight when firefighters arrived, with flames beginning to spread to neighbouring properties.
However, the swift actions of crews prevented the blaze from taking hold of the nearby homes.
The blaze has however destroyed an adjoining garage.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus removed a number of gas cylinders from the partially collapsed garage as crews worked to extinguish the flames using hose reels and jets.
A nearby vehicle suffered damage from heat and falling debris.
Residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke drifting across the area.
However, by 04:30 the fire had been extinguished.
Thankfully, no one was injured – but significant damage has been caused.
