A Cowes couple have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary surrounded by cake, cards and balloons at Old Charlton House, reflecting on a lifetime together on the Isle of Wight.
Frank and Heather Hayward marked the milestone with a lemon cake made by chef Lynn, alongside well-wishes from fellow residents.
Both born and raised on the Isle of Wight, the pair lived in Carisbrooke and Newport before meeting at Ray’s Bakery in Newport, where Frank worked as a baker and Heather as a shop assistant.
They married at midday on 27th April 1957 at St Mary’s Church in Carisbrooke, with their reception held at Unity Hall in St Thomas’s Square, where they enjoyed a turkey dinner.
The couple have fond memories of their wedding day, including a large three-tier cake made by Ray from Ray’s Bakery.
Heather wore a white full-length gown purchased second-hand and carried a bouquet of red carnations, while Frank wore a new suit and tie for the occasion. Their bridesmaids wore pink and blue dresses.
The couple also recall being able to enjoy photographs outside in fine weather on their wedding day, and later honeymooning in London, where they even watched Lonnie Donegan perform.
Staff at Old Charlton House helped mark the occasion with decorations and celebrations for the long-standing couple.
