A 3-year extension to measures designed to crack down on anti-social behaviour (ASB) has been approved by an Isle of Wight cabinet member.
Councillor Karen Lucioni has endorsed a recommendation to extend Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) on the Island for a further three years after a consultation found overwhelming support.
The PSPOs apply in areas of East Cowes, Freshwater and Totland, Lake, Newport, Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin.
While not a ‘blanket ban’ on alcohol consumption, a PSPO gives police officers the power to intervene when drinking results in disruptive behaviour, according to a council decision report.
It says:
“Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) were introduced under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 as a tool for local authorities to tackle persistent and unreasonable behaviour that negatively affects public spaces.
“The order provides the police and authorised council officers with the power to request individuals to stop drinking in public spaces and to confiscate alcohol when consumption is linked to ASB.
“It is supported by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, who have highlighted its effectiveness in reducing alcohol-related ASB and its importance in local patrol plans.
Article continues below this advertisement “While the PSPO is not a complete solution to ASB and street drinking, it remains an essential tool that works alongside support services and wider enforcement measures.
“Public consultation has shown overwhelming support for the continuation of the PSPO, with 93% of respondents in favour.”
If the decision is not called in by councillors, it will take effect from today and last until 5th July, 2028.
Why does this not apply to the whole island and not just a few towns? Half hearted measure to say the least. Where is Yarmouth, Ventnor, Bembridge, Wooton, forgotten as usual.
That is because the towns mentioned houses the
majority of anti-social familes.
