Isle of Wight Council vice-chairman was persuaded to jump into the cargo bay of a new electric cargo bike now being used to deliver cargo for commercial customers on the Isle of Wight at Sunday’s Going Electric event.
Councillor Michael Lilley was attending the Going Electric transport exhibition, organised at the Isle of Wight College by Wight Community Energy.
Councillor Lilley said:
“This event is fantastic. It’s really good to bring all the people involved in electric vehicles on the Island together.
“This council currently uses the electric cargo bike service for some of its internal mail and other similar deliveries.
“It’s a genuinely useful service that not only provides excellent value for the taxpayer but also directly contributes to our commitment to zero carbon.
“I’ve always believed that the Isle of Wight – which is only 35 miles across – is absolutely perfect for an electric vehicle revolution.
“And here we have everyone talking together about how electric vehicles can form part of the future of the Isle of Wight.”

Matthew Whittaker, from People Powered CIC, added:
“We don’t currently have any plans to carry passengers on the road but I’m grateful to Michael for helping us show that our bikes have a surprisingly large load space, and we can carry a lot of cargo in one trip.
“We’re currently operating a commercial service delivering a whole range of items for customers, including the Isle of Wight Council. We are delighted to be here at the Going Electric show.
“It’s a great opportunity to show off our expanding capability and see some of the other electric solutions that are already available, and coming in the future.”
They should have ridden him to the tip and then thrown him and the bike in a skip. The island, with its narrow road network, is exactly the wrong place for these stupid machines.

No one has electric vehicles on that pathetic island. They’re all 100 years behind
All this garbage about electric transport being “green” and net zero.
Electricity has to be generated and a lot of power stations are polluters, the production of wind turbine components is far from “green” and at this time there is no infrastructure in place or even planned to dispose of all the Lithium batteries currently being worn out, Lithium is a dangerous substance and mining it is destructive and polluting.
Until the worlds biggest polluters, India, China and America are brought under control i feel the islands gestures will never be noticed.
Spot on, the whole thing is a myth, and we do not want electric bikes, scooters or delivery ‘bikes’ cluttering up the roads, they are crowded enough already.
The blind belief that wind turbines are the way forward took a beating last year when there was insufficient wind to make them work and they are not capable of providing predictable power but there is a 100% predictable, reliable and non polluting power source which has been largely ignored and that is tidal power, bidirectional turbines sited along the south coast would provide vast amounts of continuous power 24 hours a day.
