Those visiting the coast this Summer are being urged not to use blocked-off steps at La Falaise car park in Ventnor.
The Isle of Wight Council says that the beach steps from the coastal path next to the car park have been condemned as unsafe.
Although the steps were closed off on 12th May 2022, some people are still trying to use them.
A spokesperson for the local authority has said:
“These steps are not safe to use and are in need of replacing, please do not use them – it is even too unsafe to send our team down to reposition a fallen barrier!
“They will be removed and replaced with a new set in approximately 4 weeks”.
So, let’s see.
The steps are DANGEROUS, but, they were closed in May, and it’s going to be nearly the end of AUGUST before any work to dismantle them is done!
The IoW Council and Island Roads can close main roads during the holiday season for ‘urgent works’ (works that have needed doing for MONTHS). But to take down a set of dangerous steps takes THREE MONTHS!

So why has it taken 3mths and won’t be completed till after summer holidays?. Enough money made out of carparking in Ventnor.
Well repair them then!!
Councils should work with the Isle of Wight college carpentry classes to get students to make such with perhaps local builders supply the timber for a free or at cost if advertising their company name on them IF cash is the issue for such things.

Gabion cages made the right height would make far better steps on beaches with crumbling cliff edges.
They are cheap, can be filled on site from the natural rocks, and can be built differing heights and widths to replace easily burnt, broken or rotted wooden steps.
Too easy an idea for a council who either waste millions, OR do nothing at all.

Steps may,or may not, have been officially closed in May. I live right by them and saw no evidence that they were. However a really nasty sort recently moved to the area and, among his vile acts, sawed up all the handrails of said steps and burned many of the treads. Of course, this is the Island of Grockle fantasy and wonder,so we wouldn’t want to put off the second,and third, homeowners. Maniac on the loose, who crucified a kestrel and threatens to rape women, causes thousands of pounds worth of damage, but the council say, ‘Don’t use the steps,they are a bit dodgy’.
Don’t use the steps, no not now the towns local banned individual “Simon” has cut them up for firewood, and why aren’t the police picking him up and nicking him, he is banned for christ sake.
