21-year-old Ryan Cooper from Chatfield Lodge in Newport has pleaded not guilty to the charge of manslaughter following the death of 49-year-old Gary ‘Jeff’ Stacey in February of this year.
Cooper appeared before Winchester Crown Court this morning (Friday) where he entered a not guilty plea. He has been bailed by His Honour Judge Cutler CBE to reappear before the same court on 8th May 2017 for the start of a 2-week trial.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Mr Cooper was initially arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm after Gary Stacey – known as Jeff – was found lying in the middle of St James’ Street during the early hours of Sunday 14th February. Mr Cooper, whose address has also previously been given as Alma Road, Southampton was arrested on suspicion of murder when Mr Stacey died in Southampton General Hospital.
In June Ryan Cooper – a law student in Southampton – was charged with unlawfully killing Gary Stacey, contrary to common law.
