Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on a piece of live ordnance at Alum Bay last night (Wednesday).
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to the West Wight beach by Solent Coastguard at 17:30 following the potentially explosive discovery by a member of the public.
A cordon was quickly established and having confirmed the find, Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams from Portsmouth were called over to the Island.
The bomb disposal team arrived at Alum Bay by 22:00 and carried out a controlled explosion in the dark.
The incident was brought to a close shortly after midnight.
