Concerns for the welfare of a group of people seen on Ryde Sands prompted a call out for Coastguards this evening (Monday).
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team we’re tasked at 18:17 to investigate concerns for persons possibly cut off by the tide near to Puckpool Park.
A search was carried out and the incident was swiftly confirmed as a false alarm with good intent.
It’s thought the individuals were winkle picking.
The first informant has been praised for doing exactly the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard.

Cut off by the tide???
Winkle Picking??…..What is it that ignorant selfish people don’t understand about the lockdown??
Fake indignation from idiots like you .
you shouldn’t be collecting winkles when there is an R in the month May June July and August is the right time
Thank you, dear lady. Collecting, or harvesting, rather than picking winkles. Picking is when one eats them. Still, I am sure lots of people who have no experience of these coastal matters but think the Island owes everything to them for the council tax they may pay will correct we bumpkins on our terminology.
Ha ha – this brings back memories!! As a child my parents took me winkle collecting. Other kids took fruit snacks etc to primary school whereas I was sent with a bag of cooked winkles and a pin in the lapel of my blazer. It horrified my friends!! Happy days!!
Leave them there simples
