Local residents are being invited to Sandown Canoe Lake tomorrow (Saturday) to witness the positive impact of recent community-led efforts to save the lake’s wildlife.
The event comes just 6 days after emergency action was taken to address dangerously low water levels, which had left swans, fish and other aquatic life at risk. A situation first reported by Island Echo.
In the days that followed, a major volunteer-led effort unfolded to rescue and protect the local wildlife. On Wednesday, (13th August) tankers were brought in and fresh water was pumped into the lake, helping to stabilise the environment for the wildlife that call it home. So far, more than 180,000 litres of water have been added to the lake.
The tankers – and other things like generators, nets, waders and other necessities to keep the fish alive – have been paid for thanks to a GoFundMe page. So far more than £4,200 has been raised.
Now, organisers are welcoming the public to visit the lake between 09:00 and 14:00, feed the wildlife, and see first-hand how community donations and support have made a difference.
Sweetcorn will be provided for those wanting to feed the swans and fish. Visitors are asked to bring a small donation to help continue restoration efforts and maintain the lake for the future.
