Locals are calling for urgent action to help save wildlife affected by the ‘dangerously low’ water levels at Sandown Canoe Lake.
Island Echo understands that over the past few days several reports have been made to the Environment Agency (EN) after water levels reached an extremely low level.
The canoe lake is home to numerous species of wildlife including; eels, shrimp and carp.
Several of the carp that call the lake home have already died as a result of the dwindling levels. Those still alive are gasping for air and need to be moved into deeper water as soon as possible.
Taking to Facebook this morning, Cllr Adrian Whittaker – a prominent local community champion – has said:
“I am down at Sandown Canoe Lake. We are in a critical situation. We need a few people with waders to move stranded fish back to the deep water. Any help or advice would be appreciated.”
A similar situation occurred back in August 2020 when the levels dropped by as much as 14inches.
Just a thought, the bottom is full of mud.. maybe get a digger down there to remove a area of mud which should still have water?

Isn’t the lake near the water treatment place? Lots of water there?
