A commercial building in Newport could soon be demolished, paving the way for a block of 8 flats to be built in its place.
Planning permission is being sought from the Isle of Wight Council by Tile Superstores for the redevelopment of their town centre site on Crocker Street.
The planning application submitted to the local authority seeks approval to demolish the existing building, which is said to be of poor material construction with no architectural or historic merit. In its place will be ‘Langton Mews’ – a block consisting of 8 apartments arranged over 3 floors, with secure entry and a shared private courtyard garden.
It’s proposed that there will be a total of 6x 1-bed flats and 2x 2-bed flats, a reduction from the 10x 1-bed flats mentioned to Council officials during pre-planning advice. There will be no parking made available.
Tile Superstore recently relocated to Dodnor Industrial Estate as the restrictive parking and lack of space at Crocker Street no longer meet the requirements of the growing business, which has recently shut its Lake store. The independent, local firm has been trading for 37 years.
Locals can leave comments on the plans until 30th May, with a decision set to be made by 15th June.

8 flats. The possibility of a dozen or more cars with no parking !
Why do they need cars? I plan to get rid of mine. Hardly do any miles on this tiny island. Certainly not enough to justify the expense of running a car. The buses are great and my bike and legs will do the rest.
So where do they propose the unfortunate people being housed in these pathetic boxes park their cars?
Many people are happy to have compact flats. Lots of people do not need or cannot afford big properties. Let’s be positive, there are car parks quite close by and on street parking , if they have cars.
This is a great idea. More housing in obsolete commercial units. There are many on the Island and this looks a well thought it project. I hope the Council pass this
Destruction of green and agricultural land like the two massive Ryde housing developments is totally unnecessary, and equivalent number of houses and flats could be made available by repurposing empty and obsolete commercial properties.
It’s a win win. The Council need a rethink before the Island loses its open spaces .
The council can’t think unless its how to rob people out of as much money as they can.
If you or i did what the council do we would be locked up.
It sadly won’t be ‘instead of’ the ruination of Ryde, but ‘as well as’.
Couldn’t agree more.
Any development in the town centre has to come with parking in this case 16 parking spaces by way of underground parking without any parking provisions this application needs to be refused.
What’s a COMMERICAL PROPERTY??
Apparently it’s a property used for commercial purposes.
Yeah. I was surprised by that, too.
Imagine my surprise when I found out that a taxi rank was parking for taxis. Blew my mind!
Read the headline COMMERICAL
Great they are using the site of a derelict building to build flats, will all of the flats be for sale or will these be used for rentals, as the rental market need houses / flats to rent, every time I try and view a property they either have 30 people viewing or they are gone. we need more 3bedroom houses / flats why is it always 1 or two beds , they haven’t really thought about families
Obviously, it depends who builds them, sells them, and buys them. This is the private sector. People will do what they want with these flats. By “they” you seem to be referring to the social housing sector and there is no mention in the article that this would be social housing. The private construction sector are obviously building what is wanted because they have done their research.
No, I wasnt referring to social housing, I was referring to private housing
Those buildings look more commercial than the existing one.
Can someone teach Island Echo how to spell COMMERCIAL!!!
