Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter has conducted a medical evacuation from the Cunard cruise ship Queen Victoria off the coast of the Isle of Wight this evening (Tuesday).
The luxury ship left the port of Southampton shortly before 17:00, bound for Stavanger in Norway.
However, whilst due East of the Isle of Wight, a passenger became unwell which resulted in HM Coastguard being called in to assist.
After circling for quite some time, the helicopter from Lee-on-Solent winched the casualty onboard and made for the mainland shortly after 20:00.
The casualty, who is thought to have suffered a cardiac complaint, was transferred directly to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.
The Bermuda-flagged Queen Victoria has now continued her voyage to Stavanger, albeit with some delay.
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard has said:
“HM Coastguard completed a medical evacuation and transfer from a vessel earlier today (6 June).
“Alerted at around 7pm, the Coastguard helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent was sent to the scene off the east coast of the Isle of Wight, and transferred a casualty to Portsmouth Queen Alexandra Hospital”.

What a waste of time and my money
If it was you who needed to go to hospital would you have refused to go because it was a waste of time?
Lets hope you never need their services.
Please elaborate.
Yea just to help a old druggie pointless
I often cruise, you have to have very good cruise insurance which would also include cover for being winched off a ship in an emergency. At least this poor person hadn’t got too far out before becoming unwell. Not a waste of money just a shame that someone’s holiday is spoiled.
God bless all those who go to the aid of others in their hour of need.
The emergency services are available on call to attend emergencies. They aren’t Uber. You are paying for the emergency services whether they are in use or not.
I had a heart attack k 6 years ago on Boxing Day at 5 PM.
