Children on the Isle of Wight are wearing latex gloves to school over coronavirus fears – but are being asked to remove them by staff.
Some students at Christ the King College in Newport have been going to school wearing latex gloves under the impression that this will protect them from coronavirus. Gloves will not prevent the transfer of the virus.
Staff who see students wearing gloves are asking for them to be removed are advising that everyone should follow the government advice of washing hands in soap and water for at least 20 seconds on a regular basis.
Latex gloves cause some students and staff to have a bad reaction and this is a greater risk to those members of the school community.
In a letter to parents, Mrs Ward has said:
“We continue to follow national and local advice with regards to the coronavirus, and will share any changes or relevant information with you.
“Thank you for your continued support in managing the worry and distress of some of our students, related to the fact that they are being exposed to rumours, myths and misinformation from many sources about Coronavirus.
“Please reassure your child that as a school we are following advice, get regular updates and are committed to keeping them safe”.

If parents want there children to wear gloves then they should be allowed to under the circumstances of cv and how it spreads….I’m a self employed carer and I wear gloves so why shouldn’t the children
You wear gloves as a carer to protect yourself from things like mrsa as well as protect your clients from anything you may pick up from another client.
This virus can be airborne by coughing and sneezing so gloves are obviously not going to stop that.
Gloves are not needed by school children.
They are needed by those in the medical or healthcare professions.
Nige,
I seriously hope you only wear gloves at appropriate times & remove them, bin them & wash your hands between every client,… not just wear gloves all the time.
If not, I’d be very worried for any people you care for
And as for “parents to have sense to put gloves on there children”. If the children were doing as above,.. possibly, but I’m sure that wasn’t the case
p.s. that’s ‘their’ Children
No I change my gloves and wash my hand and antibact them more than u can imagine daemy
“No I change my gloves and wash my hand and antibact them more than u can imagine daemy”
I’m glad to hear it 🙂
& that is the exact reason why school children shouldn’t be wearing them,.. ‘cos they’ll most certainly not be doing that!
I agree if parents want their children to wear them they should. I work in a supermarket and I wear them in the store !
Oh and well done for the parents to have sense to put gloves on there children
okay i used to go to christ the king and they have no understanding of anxiety. Yes it may not help the spread but teenagers these days are way more likely to have anxiety so if these gloves help them god just let them wear them! try to be understanding of the youth you are trusted to protect
How stupid of the staff. Wearing gloves is a sensible way of protecting yourself.
People do not realise how many times in an hour they touch their mouth, eyes, and nose etc, YET when wearing gloves, suddenly it feels different to do so, and makes you stop say itching your eye or face, as the gloves remind you.
They can still wash hands etc.
I think the school is naïve, petty, and for all those who will be effected by some child trying to save their, or their families lives, just in ‘case’ they have an allergic reaction to ‘someone else’s gloved hand, need to leave and work on a remote Scottish Isle.
This is an emergency, this could SAVE lives.
The parents should be allowed to personally sue the head and staff members should their child contract CV at school. Watch the rules change then.
No doubt their solution is to ‘pray more’ but those who choose to bury their heads in the sand, may end up burying their dead instead.
Why yes bad reaction but we only a small island we need to take care and get rid of it
So basically me and my friends in our year decided to sell gloves to prevent coronavirus
Hello, Mr CTK Student..
I would like to thank you for being a good human by ensuring the safety of your fellow classmates but next time please could you give them around for free.. Don’t do it now since your school has said not to wear them but if you are going to don’t make profit from selling gloves to vulnerable people at a very crowded place.
Thank you,

Oh dear,… now I know there’s no hope for us with this corona virus.
OK, so some school kids think it’ll help to wear gloves & were told it won’t … that’s why they go to school, to learn things.
What worries me is the comments,.. how grown (post-educated) adults can still be under the same misapprehension, ever after weeks & weeks of public information about this virus, how it spreads & how to avoid it, beggars belief.
If you put on gloves when your hands are likely to come in contact with the virus (e.g. when caring for someone who has it), and then remove and bin them before you do anything else (and wash your hands, ‘cos you ,may have touched the gloves to take them off) then it might help.
Other than that, you might just have well have just washed your hands for the same effect.
If you just wear gloves, all the time, you’ll spread the virus around just as much as if you didn’t wear them, perhaps more so if it gives a false sense of security & makes you less careful about other precautions.
People who preach that “Wearing gloves is a sensible way of protecting yourself.” Should know better than spreading false information. (in China you’d be arrested)
As for the ‘students’ selling them to other (more gullible) to ‘prevent corona virus’ students (using the fear of the virus to get them to part with their money) … well that’s just profiteering.
Daemy, I agree with your comment. I’ve often been irritated hearing how the Isle of Wight is often viewed elsewhere in the country, i. e. it is more often than not treated like a kind of joke, then the talk about full of chavvy types and lack of intelligence etc, and I’ve always thought those ideas about the Island unfair and untrue, but now I’m having to revise my opinion because some of the stupidity I;ve heard and read recently, and a lot of the continual ignorance of people practically coughing in your face on buses or someone coming up close behind and coughing on you whilst you’re waiting for a bus has been mind boggling. I’m now seriously wondering if there is any truth in the oft repeated mantra that the Isle of Wight has people of below average intelligence and in many cases the bottom of the whole country.
Even the people in charge of it, seem stupid. Certainly in dealings I’ve had with some of the council officials I’ve been staggered at the stupidity of them, in more ways than one.
Even the government of this country, against advice from elsewhere in Europe are more or less telling people to go on as normal. An airborne virus such as this one, needs drastic measures to stop it spreading any further, those actions are not being taken.
Hand washing and teachets should let then do this on a regular occasion. also clean desks chairs ext to prevent . better higyen is best
Some customers in Tesco lick their fingers so they can open the clear produce bags easier!!!! Some are coughing and sneezing and are not making any attempt to use a tissue or cough into their sleeve!! What is wrong with these people? Are they so ignorant (stupid) they think this virus is only a “rest of the world problem or just a mainland problem” ???? WRONG. Everyone needs to listen and follow advice from health professionals. Watch the news, use social media and read all about the virus and how it spreads. I would suggest let common sense prevail but it’s on obvious, some people on this island lack common sense.
“some people on this island lack common sense”
I’m sure it’s not just the Isle of Wight,…
