PICTURE GALLERY: Carnival spirit came to the streets of Newport yesterday evening (Saturday) as the annual main procession entertained the crowds.
Following on from a gorgeously sunny day, the weather stayed warm and dry for the evening procession that moved off from Matalan car park at 19:30. Following its traditional route, the parade of just 11 floats made its way up South Street to Trafalgar Road and back down The Mall and the High Street, coming to a end in Quay Street.
Spectators lined the streets of the Island’s county town to celebrate all things carnival, with all enjoying the show of community spirit. The annual event, which will be held again in the dark for the Illuminated carnival on 19th August, was led by the retained firefighters of Newport Fire Station with their pumping appliance, followed by the Vectis Corps of Drums. Newport Queen’s horse and carriage float followed behind.
Float entries included the Wight Strollers, who for 2015 have followed the theme of geriatric ballet dancers. One of the highlights of the carnival was the Back To The Future styled float, complete with a lookalike Delorean.
The carnival moves to Shanklin on Wednesday for Shanklin Main, moving off from Popham Road at 19:00 followed by Cowes Main on Thursday at 19:00.
