A car has crashed, flattening a traffic light, on a busy road in Newport this afternoon (Thursday).
The incident has occurred at the pedestrian crossing on Carisbrooke Road, just next to the junction with Castle Road.
A red Citroen C3 has mounted the curb flattening 1 of the lights at the pelican crossing next to the memorial cross, stopping just before a brick wall.
Police and ambulance are on the scene having been called at around 14:30 with paramedics currently tending to the elderly female driver.
The road is currently under police direction, with traffic backing up in both directions.

another licence needs too be handed back! many more too follow in time
a test needs too be given at certain age
Until its your turn, I agree but wouldn’t like it, bad enough passing it the first time
i meant an eye/ cognitive type of test !
well maybe you should not be driving on our roads… The driving test is far too easy. Just look at all the bad drivers there are… jump red lights, unknown what to do at roundabouts, no signalling, to name just a few….
Time to consider retaking tests at an older age!
If you check the statistics you will find that there are more young drivers involved in accidents than older drivers.
More idiots will be along soon….
Well you’re right there will !!!
More bad driving on the IW
Phil, may I suggest that you look at accidents on the mainland, then perhaps you might be able to expand your vocabulary to ” More bad driving on the mainland” – if you can spell it.
All the idiots are voting us down because they can’t except the truth…
The problem with the age thing is that you would have to re test at about 21 as there are more crashes with the young drivers
perhaps, to be fair,
everyone should have to take some sort of test, or at least appraisal, every 5 years…regardless of their age.
there’s a hell of a lot of bad drivers of all ages
I think you’re possibly right. And, if not a full test perhaps even a mental and reaction time test would help. But, the whole idea of who can use the roads needs to be looked at too. Maybe ALL road users should pass a test first – cyclists, electric bikes riders, e-scooters as well as car drivers and motor cyclists. And all road going e-scooters, bikes etc need to have registration plates. Administrative nightmare, yes, but the roads are a totally different environment from even 50 years ago. So many more vehicles of all descriptions.
Ha ha
They can hardly cope now, wouldn’t many people on the roads.
Still more room for the lycra brigade.
Those kinky arrogant cycling mob are a very dangerous addition too road safety, they need educating on how to respect the rules of the road….many many more will be along soon…
actually yes agreed but i see it daily…older drivers oblivious too other cars on road…not looking when pulling out or just driving dangerously ,ie too slow .menace
Trying to follow your logic, jen. Going too slow is driving dangerously? Sorry to bring facts into the equation, but people under 25 cause or are involved in four times as many accidents as people over retirement age. I think what your comments underline is the need for a long hard look at why we think we need or should drive so fast. It’s this assumption that we should be able to get from A to B in a car as fast as possible and the rage when drivers are inconvenienced or slowed down for a couple of minutes that is at the heart of most of the single vehicle incidents or collisions, but nobody has actually questioned the common attitude. Another fact is that ‘inappropriate’ speed is a factor in one third of all RTAs, and 100, 000 people are injured and 1200 die each year because of it.
If driving too slow is a menace, then traipsing around behind horses, cyclists and pedestrians is off the cards, yes?
Don’t think that’s factually correct, to start with there are far more drivers over 21 than under 21.
Yeah thanks too the silly bird in a white fiesta who moan bout me! I was stuck across the junction cause of this and had to go thru the lights of wise you wouldn’t of been able to go! So keep ya mouth shut till you know what’s going on!!
At night you could of said it’s because those lights are extra bright on green, but in the day ?. Maybe it was the female cut them up in a white fiesta?.
English it would appear is not your first language.
brilliant English…. maybe you need to go back to school..
Smoke weed every day
How???? What is going on with these idiot drivers, luckily no one was hurt or even killed!!!
Oh what a suprise! Another OAP that’s a menace on the rds! Only good news is she was more than likely flat out at 15mph could of been a lot worse!!
I think EVERYONE should have a retest every 10 years, and an eye sight test every two years…
I am a 77 year old driver, but there are 77 year olds and 77 years olds, With a vast amount of differences in driving skills, abilities, awareness and common sense between them, Never the less I think that all drivers reaching the age of 70 should take a proficency test (not a full test) to establish their right to be behind the wheel. Eyesight, driving skills, awareness etc and being compus mentus which clearly some aren’t
Spot on Keith! Would then get rid of half the slow blind old bats on the rd and speed up this island!!
You can’t park there mate
More champagne Charlie’s on the road.
Of all the accidents reported daily the smallest ‘group’ proportionally are older drivers. The venom towards older people is therefore disproportionate. Proving that ageism is rife. Beware people. You’re all heading there so get a grip on those thought processes. Show some respect if you want to receive it down the road. What goes around comes around.
