Hunnyhill in Newport has been closed in both directions following a water leak that occurred late last night (Sunday).
The closure is in place until further notice while the leak, which occurred shortly before 23:00, is dealt with by Southern Water contractors.
Traffic disruption expected throughout today (Monday).
The incident is also affecting Southern Vectis bus services.
Route 1 and Route 51 buses are unable to travel along Hunnyhill and are instead diverting via Hunnycross Way and the dual carriageway.
Services towards Cowes are travelling via the diversion before rejoining their normal route at St Mary’s Hospital, while buses towards Newport are diverting from St Mary’s Hospital via the dual carriageway and Hunnycross Way before returning to Newport Bus Station.
As a result of the closure, bus stops between St Mary’s Hospital and Towngate are currently not being served.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and avoid the area where possible while the road remains closed.
Looks as if works of some kind have previously happened there, seeing as the water is leaking out around an area of new tarmac. So, while water is wasted the rest of us are subject to a hosepipe ban!

Oh look water being wasted again…don’t panic, don’t panic, we can just extend the customers hosepipe ban until 2050 and triple everyone’s bills & keep the bosses bonuses flowing.
Are you aware of the allocation of your water bill, and are you also aware that the infrastructure, specifically the pipes, dates back to the Victorian era? Water utility companies are obligated to employ personnel for their maintenance and repair. Do you believe your payment solely covers water consumption, or does it also encompass services such as waste removal?
All those extra houses being built have put a strain on the antiquated water system that Southern water has failed to maintain, will only get worse.
Totally agree and this is happening everywhere on the Island. It should be a massive thought when these big site are created and should be considered in the planning permissions. Maybe even refused unless the developer is going to improve the infrastructure prior to building. Pennyfeathers will be next, likely to burst the Ashey Rd line and flood our Stadium again.
Make you laugh that the stupid unenforceable hose pipe ban is around..More lost here than from hundreds of garden hoses use for a few minuets a day..
