A car has smashed into a lamp post and has become wedged against a building on the industrial estate in Newport this morning (Wednesday).
Police are on scene at Riverway, where a red Seat Ibiza has careered off the road and into a lamp post, resulting in significant front-end damage to the vehicle.
The impact has led to the local car’s airbags being deployed.
The car has come to a stop wedged between the base of the street light and the wall of Dunelm Mill. No damage has been caused to the commercial premises, however.
UPDATE @ 09:53 – Police have confirmed that a 55-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level is above the limit.
He remains in police custody at the current time.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was alerted to the single vehicle collision at 07:30.

Yes, we’ll be waiting with batted breath for the full facts…
Well that’s what a lot of people say, wait until the full facts are published before commenting….already voted down for doing what you ask, strange people on here…
And it was travelling TOWARDS Hurstake Rd from Lidl… how???
According to the latest update, it was drink driving…..what a bloody looser, 5 years and a retest at the end of his ban..
won’t go to jail a little tap to hand if that
How?!? Just how! It’s on other side of road?? And must of been going at speed…
Drug driving needs to stop
Why? It’s great fun
Won’t your mummy be wondering where you are?
Yea until u kill yourself all some other poor innocent person you fool
Pretty sure it says ‘drink driving’?
Well, irrespective of how it happened, I’m just very pleased to see that the only damage done was artificial and not life. The speed that car was clearly going could have been to another vehicle or a pedestrian.
We can replace a car and a lamppost, but no way can we replace lives
Fkn assholes everywhere..
You can’t Park there Sir!
If it was Drug or alcohol related licences should be taken away for min 5 years big fine and or prison if they don’t pay, it could have been a child or anyone walking along the pavement it went over.
Excellent redesign of the car, well done. Lifetime driving ban, or slight tap on the wrist? Latter norm for IOW.
We have all been wondering how he managed that, speed and intoxication hold the answers.
I walk along there around that time, and consìder myself very lucky indeed not to have been flattend.
Throw the bloody book at him please.
Interesting.
Na wont happen too soft
I saw this on my way to work this morning how on Earth can a car end up like that that must have been really tanking it could have killed somebody walking to work this morning quite a lot of people use that pavement on the way to work and college
Why must people drink and drive?!
How can anybody think they are capable of operating heavy machinery after having an alcoholic drink?!
Innocent people could have been injured – or even the driver himself who could have then taken an ambulance crew away from someone who needed it more for a medical emergency.
I have no sympathy for those who willingly choose to get in a car after having a drink.
You should not be allowed to consume aby units prior to getting in a car – There should be no legal limit, a zero tolerance – it should be 0.
Alcohol will affect people differently – the amount consumed and the type of drink consumed. License should be taken away immediately if anyone is found to have been drinking and driving!
Drunk at 7.30 in the morning?? What??
After effects of the night before?
What?? Exactly. Law needs to crash down on totally irresponsible drivers on drink and/or drug drivers now! No excuse whatsoever for any person in control of a vehicle pissed or out of their heads on drugs. 1st Take away their licence . 2nd jail time 3rd Name and shame them. Total bloody idiots.
Glad they caught him, another alcoholic driver off the roads – but for how long? Hope they take his driving licence away from him. Stiffer punishments are needed with some for the seriousness of the offence to be relevant.
Who needs a licence? You can open a car door, start the engine and drive off without a licence, insurance or MOT – and many do just that.
Wearing a tag that sends an alert to the police if it travels at over 10mph? Put them in prison for 10 years?
Nothing will be done because too many Magistrates, police, MPs and civil servants are habitual drink-drivers and may be caught one day.
Deserves all he gets and more what a bloody danger to all other road users especially that time of the day people travelling to work ,and with people like drug drink drivers about those people who went out this morning to work might not of returned due to this piece of shite on the road
What is surprising is the lack of skid/braking marks on the pavement..
Good to see no-one’s jumping to conclusions here: at this stage, it’s only “suspicion” of DD.
What an absolute knuckle head. I hope this person is admonished frequently by friends, family and professionals who speak to him and is regularly made to feel like tool.
Agree with all the comments below but absolute silence on the fact the driver is a “well into middle aged male” “who thinks it’s OK to drink and drive…. If it has been an 18/19/25 year old they would have been” hung drawn and quartered by scrupulous readers!
Well that car’s off the road, let’s hope the idiot who was driving it gets taken off as well.
Christ he must of been going what a twat bet he gets f all
