A car has crashed and come to rest on its side in a hedge on the main road into East Cowes this morning (Sunday).
The incident, which occurred shortly before 06:20, has taken place at Whippingham Shute between Racecourse and Folly Lane.
Police, fire and ambulance crews have all responded to the scene.
It was initially feared the driver was trapped inside the vehicle, but it has been confirmed that they managed to exit the car without needing to be extricated by fire crews.
No other vehicles are thought to have been involved.
UPDATE @ 14:36 – The driver of the car, a Toyota Aygo, narrowly avoided being impaled, it has been revealed.. Read more at https://www.islandecho.co.uk/driver-narrowly-escapes-being-impaled-on-wooden-stake/

This Hedge Plowing seems to be a regular occurrence along here, I wonder why!
Because, one would surmise, that the ambition of the driver exceeds the ability of the driver.
Be generous… it might have been black ice. Overnight temps were -1C . OTOH you’re probably right, even so.
I was being generous.
Another careful brilliant Island driver ! I feel sorry for the hedge… think of the wildlife..
Weather conditions well published, and the road is wide and in good quality, so how can a driver turn a car on its side??.
If it was a medical reason, that’s unavoidable however, if it wasn’t perhaps the driver doesn’t have what’s needed to drive a car..
So glad the IOW sport of flipping and tipping cars is back. All around Britain there are quirky local pastimes, cheese rolling and shin kicking spring to mind. Rolling cars is now so embedded in this island’s culture perhaps there needs to be some sort of governing body that could create rules, award points and give out trophies at the end of the year. After all Motorcross started from humble beginnings and now has a national following so we really need to think big on this.
Given someone missed death by inches and you don’t know what caused the accident I don’t think you are very funny and the 5 x thumbs up yet again shows the level of immaturity on this site.
It’s nice to read a comment from someone with a sense of humour, because let’s face it, the standard of driving on the island IS a joke!!
