A car crashing onto its roof is causing heavy delays between Sandown and Shanklin this afternoon (Thursday).
Police, fire and paramedics are on scene on Sandown Road, outside Church of The Good Shepherd, following a single vehicle collision. The first 999 was made at around 12:15.
At the scene a Suzuki Ignis has come to rest on its roof having collided with a wall and railing.
The force of the impact has completely bent the railings which have been left pointing upward.
Island Echo understands an elderly male has been helped from the vehicle. He is currently receiving treatment in the back of an ambulance.
Pumping appliances from Sandown, Shanklin, Newport and Ryde were all called to the scene but most resources were immediately stood down, which the incident thankfully less serious than first feared.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service quickly dispatched an Operational Commander and Critical Care Paramedic to the scene.
Sandown Road is currently closed at the junction with Newport Road.
UPDATE @ 13:00 – The driver of the vehicle has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital in an ambulance.
Bartletts are on scene recovering the vehicle. The road is expected to reopen shortly.

Glue some springs to the roof so next time it end up like this it’ll just bounce right side up again lol
Another old driver who needs a re-test
The young drivers need to take a re-test
Better idea make the island 20mph and there would be
less accidents.
The plan going forward is to get motors off the road.
Heavy fines for persons breaking the speed limit and
points on licences will get many motorists off the roads.
Personally I think all vehicles should be crushed and only
driverless vehicles should be used.
The island is the perfect place to experiment / trial driverless
vehicles.
UNLIKE NUMPTIES, THEY DON’T SPEED
THEY DON’T PARK ILLEGALLY AND THEY
DON’T HAVE ACCIDENTS
Hmm correct me if wrong but how do you roll a car on a 30mph road?
Make the road 20mph and there would be no rolls
Hit the rails
Maybe time to call it a day.
Would your advice to call it a day include the hundreds of young people who roll their cars or leave the road in one vehicle incidents or cause accidentsc every year, Goon? Thought not.
Why, if the island speed limit was 20mph there would be
less rolls on the island.
At present there are more rolls on island roads than in
Tesco bakery.
I see the Island tradition of parkingthe car on its roof lives on. Perhaps it is time this elderly driver hung up his driving gloves?
Same question to you Marcus. If rolling his car is a sign of the oldie needing to hang up his driving gloves, what about all the bad drivers under 70 who do it every year? Or is it different for them and just bad luck and not bad driving? Glad to see logical thought processing and lack of bigotry is alive and well on the Island…
Elderly drivers are much safer than young numpty
drivers.
Hope the gentleman is doing ok, that must of been really scary when it happened?
My thoughts are with the Gentleman. I hope that he is OK.
The Plods seemed to spend a lot of time hanging around looking at it. And an “Operational Commander” – please!
More bad driving on the Iow
