UPDATED: Firefighters are responding to a car fire at Downend on the outskirts of Newport this afternoon (Thursday).
A BMW X5 is currently engulfed in flames, sending black smoke billowing into the sky.
Traffic is delayed in the area.
UPDATE @ 17:25 – Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have successfully extinguished the blaze and are now damping down.
Sadly, the car has been destroyed.
The Downs has been closed in both directions whilst the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service deal with the incident.
UPDATE – The scene has now been cleared and all roads have re-opened.
