CAR CRASHES INTO HOUSE AND WIPES OUT TRAFFIC LIGHTS ON COPPINS BRIDGE

UPDATED: A car has collided into the corner of a house on Coppins Bridge in Newport this evening (Friday), wiping out the traffic light system in the process.

Fire crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and multiple Police units are on the scene at the junction of Barton Road, next to the pedestrian crossing.

The car has collided with a power supply box feeding the traffic lights, causing a signal outage at this time.

Emergency services were called to the crash at around 18:30.

An Island Echo reader has described how they heard a loud bang and saw sparks fly before the traffic lights failed.

One lane is currently closed while emergency services deal with the incident.

UPDATE @ 19:15 – Fire crews have now made the scene safe and have cordoned off the area.

The vehicle – a Peugeot estate – is being recovered by Stag Lane Motors.

It is unclear how long the traffic lights will remain out of action for, but Island Roads are in attendance to assess the damage.

UPDATE @ 20:15 – Emergency services have now stood down, but there remains activity at the scene tonight.

Engineers from Scottish and Southern Energy are working to isolate and potentially repair the damaged electricity box.

The traffic lights on Coppins Bridge remain out of action, save for the lights outside the Cineworld Complex.
