7 teams headed to the Isle of Wight Community Club to compete for the annual Godbold Petanque Trophy on Sunday 20th October.
The teams competing for the trophy were Camphill Stormers, Bargeman’s Sails, Victorians, Plessey Hotshots, Fokkers, Horseshoe Ringers and Ventnor Nomads.
The morning session was split into 2 leagues, with the winners and runners up of each league progressing to the afternoon’s main competition; with the remaining teams playing for the plate.
Semi final 1 saw last year’s Godbold winners – Plessey Hotshots – playing this year’s summer league champions Camphill Stormers; with each team winning one leg each, it came down to the last leg to decide the outcome. After a long very close competitive game, Camphill were triumphant and progressed to the final.
The 2nd semi-final saw the Fokkers playing the Victorians with the latter progressing to the final after a 4-1 win.
The final, which was a repeat of their morning league match, was another keenly contested match, which saw Camphill Stormers captain Sean Newton and Eddie Farrant win their leg 13-6; however, after Chris Cooke and Matt Cupis lost their leg 7-13. Another tense deciding leg would decide the result and the destination of this year’s trophy. Hannah Barnes and Dave Sedgeley eventually won their leg 13-11, giving Camphill Stormers a 4-1 win.
Team Captain, Sean Newton, said:
“To win the league for 3 successive years was amazing and now to do the league and Godbold double in 2024 was a great achievement and showed the commitment of the team to not only win but also supporting each other.
“We were pushed very hard by Plessey and the Victorians but came through.”
“I would like to thank Ben Bishop, who not only organised the competition but also runs the summers leagues, as well as members of the team at Plessey as they host all of the competitions, and the terrains are suitably prepared and ensure that everything runs well.”
