6 buses from the Isle of Wight Bus Museum’s collection made the short journey from Park Road to the Esplanade on Sunday evening to mark the closure of Ryde Bus Station in its current form after 48 years.
The procession of historic vehicles attracted attention from enthusiasts and the public alike.
The revisions to bus stopping arrangements are part of the wider £10million Ryde Esplanade development scheme already in progress. As previously reported by Island Echo, the existing bus station closed this morning. While the work is in progress buses will stop elsewhere on the Esplanade, including the Rose Gardens.
The current bus station came into use in May 1974, featuring the ‘sawtooth’ arrangement of bays. The revisions now underway will be closer in nature to the pre-1974 arrangement, with a linear arrangement of bus stops.
