
UPDATED: A burst water main has resulted in the closure of the main road in and out of Newport this morning (Thursday).
Southern Water contractors are working to fix a water main that has blown on Fairlee Road between Newport and Whippingham.
It was initially hoped that the repairs could be carried out under temporary traffic lights, but it has been deemed that a full closure is needed. It is unknown how long the road will remain closed for but it will re-open as soon as repair work is complete.
All traffic is being diverted via Staplers.
Over 130 properties are without water as a result of the incident.
A spokesperson for Southern Water has said:
“We’re working as quickly as possible to resolve this issue and we apologise for any inconvenience caused”.
UPDATE @ 16:15 – Island Roads have confirmed that South Street, Newport is to become one-way from 19:00 this evening to allow for repairs to another burst water main.
Traffic is said to be gridlocked in and around the down as rush hour arrives.
UPDATE @ 23:03 – Fairlee Road is set to re-open at 01:00 (Friday) following completion of the water main works.
UPDATE @ 02:05 Friday – Fairlee Road has now reopened to traffic.
UPDATE @ 03:20 Friday – South Street, Newport has now also reopened to traffic in both directions.
