27 British Gas colleagues and their friends have raised over £900 for 2 charities by cycling around the Isle of Wight – a distance of 65 miles – on Friday (15th July).
The 1st charity to benefit is Testicular Cancer UK, a survivor-run support and awareness charity founded in 2004. Their main goal is to help men and their families through testicular cancer with friendship and support with an online group.
1 of the colleagues has been diagnosed and is currently going through treatment, and the group would like to show their support in helping raise awareness and funding for this terrible illness.
The 2nd charity to benefit from the round Island cycle is the Isle of Wight Wave Project, a local charity that provides surf therapy for young people, helping to reduce their anxiety and improve confidence. It’s the chosen local charity for the Isle of Wight team, who have been supporting them for the past 4 years.
The team mainly came from the Isle of Wight, Southampton, Portsmouth, and the surrounding area and were led by Paul Richards, Customer Delivery Manager, Isle of Wight. Backing them up in the support vehicle was Steve Robinson, also a Customer Delivery Manager, who provided very welcome refreshments and general help as the cyclists took the best part of the day to complete the course.
The British Gas team are still taking donations at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/britishgasiow2022.
Participant Ian Butler said:
“We had tyre blow outs, dropped cans of Fanta, leg cramps, back and neck pain and stuck gears, but most of all we have a group of amazing people pushing their bodies to their limits for two charities close to their hearts. Thank you for the phenomenal effort by everyone involved in Friday’s mammoth challenge.”
Paul Richards says:
“I’m really proud to have colleagues that continue to support our local community, and a national Cancer charity dear to the team’s hearts. This year the ride was particularly challenging with the heat and road closure adding on extra miles. Everyone managed to hold a smile through gritted teeth for 2 such a great causes.
Abbie James, Wave Project Coordinator, has said:
“I can’t thank you all enough for helping to raise awareness for the Island project, and I can’t believe how much money you raised on your cycle. So brilliant this year, especially as we’ve been unable to sell our delicious sweetcorn at the Garlic Festival to raise funds to run the much-needed sessions for island children”
Cycling alongside Paul from British Gas were Lee Virrill, Leuthen Richmond, George Blake, Ben Jardine, Jacob Gardner, Lee Wilson, Darren Mills, Jack Fryer, Paul Richards, Scott Peacock, Keiron Costello, Paul Henderson, Luke Benfield, Keiron Costello, Richard Hoare, Mark Smith, Daryl Robinson, Jonathan Kimber, Martyn Legg, Chris Jeffery, Sonny, Alex Elliott, and Ian Butler.
